Subject: Runner going for Half Iron in first tri
Hi everyone,

I started running and training for half marathon last year, but am looking for more challenge than just running. So i both a bike and love it, and i am starting swimming classes in september.

I am wondering if the bar is to height to do half iron for my first tri, but i am sure that today i have the fitness to complete a olympic distance but am I.

Thanks

I think that if you believe you can do it, then you can! My first road tri was a HIM and 2 weeks later another.

My background isn't running, its cycling. Practice your swimming, that is what I found was a limiter for most.

Good Luck.

X 2

Schedule a HIM for sometime in the future then use a few 'smaller' tri's for long workouts and practice your transition set up. Consider those races like a rehearsal.

What's the rush to go straight to HIM?

I started training last year and planned for this to be my first race year.  I wanted to do a half this year, too, but I started with 2 Olys prior to my first HIM.  I found that the experience of actually racing, especially in the water, was invaluable when I did my first half.  If what happened to me on my first race swim happened during a HIM instead of an oly, I don't know what would have happened.  Especially if you are just getting started in the pool.

It's just my 2 cents, but just because it's possible to do it, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea.  You should read this if you haven't already.

I did a HIM in my first year, but not 1st race. The transition practice in a few sprints is great experience. If your goal is just to get from point A to point B, go for it. But if you are like 99% triathletes, you will want to do well and that is worth a few tune up races.

Good luck.

At least you are in shape. for me I'm starting with 2 or 3 sprints this year an oly in the oly year (2010) then a half in 2011 and aiming for IMC in 2012 or IMUK.
