BTW, while I may live in Seattle I have family in Michigan that I visit occassionally and do bike there when in town. I checked the laws to make sure I was being legal but I have never checked the road costs/taxes for Michigan. Are the roads there covered mostly by property tax as it is in Washington or are they payed for solely through a gas tax/vehicle licensing etc...can anyone from Michigan enlighten me?

It's more complicated than this, but a quick google got me http://www.mcrc-mi.org/PDFfiles/MCRCroadfundingcrisis3232009.pdf

Good luck.   ETA: Check out slide 14 in the ppt linked above. Absolutely classic.

Disgusting. Horrid. I really hope they are fired. I will be sending e-mails shortly- to the sponsors, and to my friends who will also write in.

BUT-

Not to hijack the point of this thread, but to defend MI, I have found cycling here to be extremely safe, and I almost never have any type of bad encounter with drivers. I have been honked at 3 times, and about 15 drivers have gotten just a touch too close in the two years I have lived here. I have never been buzzed, shouted at, yelled at, had things thrown at me, had to slam on my brakes due to stupid drivers- nothing, nada. In San Diego, these things happened to me on EVERY ride. I also do not ride around Metro Detroit...

mr2tony - 2009-08-06 11:11 AM Lawyers -- what are the liability issues against the radio station if a cyclist were to get hit by someone or by soemthing thrown by someone who listened to this segment this morning?

One can always sue for anything. Whether you win is another matter. The negative publicity might be interesting. You would have to prove that the person who threw it got the idea from the D&D show. The state could bring a criminal case against them for inciting violence. It would be a tough case as they would argue 1) free speech, 2) the person that threw something made their own decision.

I tweeted at Lance Armstrong with a tiny URL for the podcast.

You never know, maybe he'll listen to it, and bring some weight to bear.

Crazy and brilliant.

I just called and spoke to someone.

Apparently, I misheard the station.  They were saying, according to this woman, that it's ridiculous that Colorado should even HAVE to enact this law.... jeepers, according to her, this was something of a PRO CYCLIST segment !

I told her that I would be contacting all of their sponsers, by phone and by letter, to let them know my displeasure.

And I told her that I don't live anywhere NEAR Michigan, but this pissed me off so much.

I sent a message saying that as a member of the media I can't understand them saying these things and that I'll be in Ann Arbor this weekend and it worries me that I may be injured because a listener things these guys are preaching gospel. And I linked them to several news stories about cyclists who were killed -- not the stories of when they were killed, but stories of how they were remembered, as fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers and friends.

I also am sending emails to their sponsors, especially Beaumont Hospitals, who hopefully will see the recklessness of these DJ's comments and drop their sponsorship.

Hmmm, is it just me or does one of them look like Mr. Bean?

My letter sent a while ago:

So Deminski and Doyle are now promoting hate against those of us that prefer to stay fit rather than burn gas and get fat? Some of us actually give plenty of room to cars, we stop at stop signs and red traffic signals. We choose routes that are lower in traffic and we accept the fact that we have the share the road and don't think we own it.

Using their show and your station as a platform to incite harted toward those of us who are doing something that is good for our health, our communities and our environment is irresponsible, petty and potentially dangerous. I stopped listening to your station once these nitwits replaced JJ and the morning crew, this only reaffirms my decision in doing so. I'll be sharing the sound clip with my friends and suggesting they boycott not only your station, but your sponsors many of whom I've CC'd on this email.

Good.  Maybe this will make them sit up and take notice.  I rarely write in to shows about this kind of stuff, but this one has my ire up.  Thanks for some great copy guys, I'm gonna steal from ya.

I don't believe it (I'm not doubting that's what she told you - I don't believe her response).  Whether it was part of another segment or not, the guys talked about the everyday rider who doesn't completely stop at intersections and riders who go two wide in a lane without yielding to vehicles.  They mocked those who wear jerseys as if we were pro's calling us arrogant and implied that violence was justified... I'd encourage her to re-listen to the audio - listen to the people who called in to the station.  There was nothing PRO about this segment other than it may have originated from another incident.  That still does not justify the radio hosts comments and the promotion of malice towards cyclists.

Then they should also get their logo and info removed from the sponsor list of the station.

Interestingly enough, Beaumont Hospitals is a reputed Transplant Center that does Kidney, Kidney/Pancreas and Liver transplants with a VERY well respected liver surgeon (Dr. Alan Koffron) in charge of the program.  I met the Doc last year in Pittsburgh at the Transplant Games.  He was out to the cycling venue to watch the races.  He happens to be an avid cyclist and asked us if he could ride the road course with us on our warmup lap.  We said yes.  Great guy.  I have sent him a personal e-mail as well as one to the PR department of Beaumont.

My letter to several local sponsors:

I'm sure that by now most of you are aware of the disapproval several of us cyclists have against the 94.7 WCSX Deminski and Doyle 8-5-2009 Radio Broadcast about cyclists.  If you are not yet aware, please listen to the attached audio clip from yesterdays show.  While the a station representative claims that this segment was about a professional cyclist, the audio clearly states the speakers dislike of Michigan cyclists.

I am appalled at the comments made.  This broadcast implies that it is acceptable to harass and assault cyclists.  I have sent my concerns to the radio station manager.  I am now contacting you as sponsors of the show.  I am not asking you to pull your sponsorship, however I am asking you to review the comments made by these radio personalities and to address them directly.

As a sponsor of their show you assume a partnership with them that implies your agreement with the content on their program.  I would like to know that you do not endorse these kind of statements and that you will do something to correct the issue at hand.  I would encourage you to express your concerns with the station manager.  I encourage you to inform them that you are receiving emails that express your customers disapproval.  You are the backing to WCSX and you hold the power of accountability for what your business promotes.

If you do not have a problem with the statements made by Deminski and Doyle on the broadcast yesterday about cyclists, then I will not frequent your business any further.  I will also express my displeasure of your associations with WCSX to my friends and collegues.

Thank you for your time in reading this letter.

Dear Gentlemen:

I am a cyclist residing in Baltimore, Maryland.

I have never lived in Michigan and have no contacts with your state, but a segment on Deminkski & Doyle (brought to my attention on a triathlon website) was so outrageous that I felt I had no choice but to write.

The segment implied that violence toward cyclists - “lobbing things” at us, going “Grand Theft Auto” on us - was not only acceptable but also encouraged by your station.

There are, of course, cyclists who choose to disobey traffic laws, but the majority of us obey traffic laws, stay on the right side of the road, never ride two plus aside, etc.

Your comments are especially insensitive considering the amount of cyclist related deaths caused by drivers in the past month. Laughing at the caller who said “I get manslaughter, you get crippled for the rest of your life” is inappropriate and disgusting.

I have CC’d your sponsors on this email - I urge you all to consider if this is the type of station with which you want to be associated.

Very truly yours,
Tricia X. XXXX

I give this thing a big 'Meh' - did any of you actually listen to the segment?  They made a lot of legitmate (though based in sarcastic humor) claims about the behavior of a segment of the bicycle-riding population.

I didn't hear any "violence incitement" any that 7 minute segment.  Are there additional segments I should listen to?

And some of it was even funny - "We get it. You're in shape"

I agree, there is bit of humor to it, however after listening to the clip a few times, I stand on my previous statements.
