Subject: 70.3 Training
I am looking for a Half Ironman beginner training schedule (ideally for free). The closest I have found is the Intermediate schedule from trinewbies, but I have been unable to locate a beginner one. Does anyone know if there are any free beginnner half schedules, or if not which of the paid schedules online are the best?

Thanks!

Are the paid ones less complicated than the free onehttp://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/trainingplans-list.asp?h=1&racetype=1&racesubtype=4&level=0)?

The reason I ask is that I am used to plans that tell me: Sunday: run 3 miles, Bike 20; Monday: swim 1500 yds; Tuesday: Run 7 miles, etc.   The free plan above will take me like 20 minutes a day just to figure out what I am supposed to do that day!

Huh?

Day #1

Swim 40m ----- -----
wu: 200swim, 200kick, 200pull, 200swim
main: 1 x 1500, RPE 4 (alternate 1 x 1000)
cd: 4 x 50, each slower than last

Run 40m ----- -----
Very easy. RPE 3

It doesn't get much easier than that in any plan anywhere.

I used the Tri-newbies Intermediate one because it had Fridays off.  I had a fair amount of base to build on though.

I know you're looking for a beginner one - what about starting with their beginner OLY plan and then use it as a bridge for this one.  Or use one of the OLY plans on here as a start?

ETA - The free and paid plans on here are good.  All plans will take a little time to figure out and organize.

Great, thanks for info that sounds like a good approach. I was wondering about the Trinewbies Intermiediate but I was concerned that going into week 6 or 7 there was training 7 days/week (the Friday off day is replaced with a 20 mile ride). Is it typical for IM/ 1/2 IM training to have no days off?

I thought this was a great plan. I went over it with my coach and we changed very little. I've done 2 HIM's early in the summer was well prepared. If some of the detail is too much for you there are total minutes for bike, swim, or run at the bottom of each day.

It really isn't that complicated though and if you have questions just ask. There are many people here that would love to help you. Some of that detail is important and will better prepare you than just logging time or miles.

I use this book for all my training programs. It has programs for Sprint thru Ironman, and 8-10 different levels of training in each distance. Complete with swim workouts as well. There are better plans i'm sure but for a small price you get quite a lot with this book.

I use that book also.  It takes a little while to learn all the codes but now I can decipher them very easy.

The "gray" coloured training I treated as "optional" - and I didn't do it because I commuted to work on top of training - which covered it.  I don't know if it's normal not to have a day off - but I needed one every week.  (I often did something - walk, Wii Fit, swim, etc. - but not hard training.)  Those days are EZ anyway - nothing tough.

Thanks very much, I will check out the book, and thanks popsracer for pointing out the total minutes at the bottom of the training schedule! -- that helps me to look at the schedule in terms that I am used to. Looks like IM/ 1/2 IM training requires a bit more thinking/planning than marathons and olympics tris.
