I did my first half mary this past February.  One of my objectives for doing it was to work on my run base since that's my weakest triathlon leg by far.

I used the Galloway first-timers plan which is basically two short runs (30-45 min) and one long run per week.  I worked up to 10-12 miles on my long runs the month prior to the race.   The plan worked well for me and I was able to finish fairly comfortably (I even was able to do a negative split).

I think the long runs are important.  I don't think I had  run more than six miles in my life up to that point and the longer runs at first were definitely "unexplored territory", with a lot of the challenge being psychological as much as physical.  Once I had a couple of 10-milers under my belt then I started to feel a lot more confident about doing the race.

It is possible to do a race on a x2 schedule?  Sure, but I wouldn't recommend it.  I think you're setting yourself up for a painful experience and possible injury.

My $0.02

Will add my vote to run 3 x week for the half mary.  You mention the race is only 5 weeks away, so that's only 5 additional runs.  I trained for a half using the Hal Higdon Novice plan and did fine with 3 runs per week.  Swam and biked for the cross training.

Those of you that like running consider yourself very lucky.  Bike and swim are so much easier than running.. I know thats my opinion, but who else agrees???

I don't think bike and swim are easier, they're just different. One of the things I like best about running is I can do it anywhere, anytime. It's more hassle free than the swim or bike. But each sport as its own rewards and I like them all.

Thaitri - 2009-08-12 9:45 AM 3x per week... Ok,, ok I'll think about it.. But I know myself and i know i wont want to do it...  Remember not just want, I have many family and professional demands on my time.  Just one more run will cause issue with other things in my life...

No I dont want somebody to tell me that 2x a week is great... Just looking for suggestions.  This stuff is only 10 weeks old to me...

Honestly, I think if you make each training session count when running 2x a week, then you can do it. I would just recommend adding a third time so you get some miles on your legs. Your third day can be anywhere from 3 to 5 miles. In the long run I think this would keep your body in better running shape.

BINGO... That's my feelings exactly.

OK I will take everybody advise and run 3x a week. Short, mid and long...

Its only 5 weeks... After that my season is over and I do some base miles...back in the pool and on the bike..

But I first got a tri this weekend. Almost forgot..

The consensus is clearly 3x per week is better, but if you are going to do 2x/week anyway, I'd push my short run up to 5 miles and push the long run up from 7.5 to 9 to 10 to 11 then go out and run it.  Just my opinion
