Subject: RE: Half Marathon- Suggestions/Ideas... I did my first half mary this past February. One of my objectives for doing it was to work on my run base since that's my weakest triathlon leg by far. I used the Galloway first-timers plan which is basically two short runs (30-45 min) and one long run per week. I worked up to 10-12 miles on my long runs the month prior to the race. The plan worked well for me and I was able to finish fairly comfortably (I even was able to do a negative split). I think the long runs are important. I don't think I had run more than six miles in my life up to that point and the longer runs at first were definitely "unexplored territory", with a lot of the challenge being psychological as much as physical. Once I had a couple of 10-milers under my belt then I started to feel a lot more confident about doing the race. It is possible to do a race on a x2 schedule? Sure, but I wouldn't recommend it. I think you're setting yourself up for a painful experience and possible injury. My $0.02 Mark |
