How often do you replace bicycle tires for road bikes?

I've had my bike since the beginning of March, and I think I've put about 1000-1100 miles on it so far. I have no idea if they look worn out because all road tires look 'worn out' to me. (ie, not a lot of tread)

I guess I'm just nervous because I got a flat two weeks ago, and I have a race this Sunday. I had a small puncture in my tire and the bike shop said it wasn't enough to warrant a repair or new tire.... still... I'd hate to risk getting a flat in my race because I still haven't mastered changing a flat. I don't want to DQ!

Thanks!

If it was worn I think your bike shop would have tried to sell you a new tire.

I replace mine when they show significant wear or damage, or when I start getting multiple flats. Usually by the time the latter happens the former is quite evident.

Look at it this way: the guy whose livelihood depends on selling you new and replacement equipment says you don't yet need new tires.

Oh, and practice changing flats. It's easy, and there is no reason for anyone to DNF (not DQ) because of a flat.

Some tires have wear indicators in them.  Check to see if you have tiny little hole like indentations somewhere on your tire.  Another thing to look for that would indicate you might need to change your tire is if you have any larger slashes in your tire, especially ones that go down to thread.  I had to laugh at one of my friends (who knew better) who actually had a flat tire.  I do not mean no air, it was a flat surface.  You should change those.

And yeah, you do not have to master changing a tire, but you should at least be able to do it.  If you can do it then you won't get a DNF.

Ok, thank you! I think I was just looking for reassurance that I'll be ok this weekend. :-)

Is there any general rule about how many miles to put on your tires before changing them though?

And I've taken a couple of classes on roadside repair-I know HOW to change a tire, I just have a really hard time getting the tire off in the first place, and then getting it back on after you change the tube.  I'm scared of practicing on my tires too much while in season(in case I can't get it back on)- but after my last tri Labor day weekend, I'll be working on that until I get it down pat!

Depends very much on the tires. I got >5K miles on my last two sets of Michelin Pro2Races, and am still riding my first set of P3Rs.

Tires can last a LONG time with normal use.

I end up having to replace mine way before they would normally need to due to damage of some sort or another.  I have replaced around 3 in the last couple years do to sidewall cuts.

My conti 4000s have these visible, and as far as I know, have since they were brand new (they're still only ~500 miles in).  Just be warned, this may not be a good indicator.

I made it down to my group ride last Sunday having filled my tires in a pretty dark garage.  When I got there, I looked down and noticed that I'd worn through the rubber on my rear tire all the way to the casing.  WOOPS.  Guess it was time for a new tire!   Fortunately only one other guy showed up, so I time-trialed home and swapped out bikes really fast.

I've never worn a tire that far down before.  Usually you start getting flats or just notice that the tread pattern is mostly/all gone.

Cara,

I was in the same boat as you last week. My tires showed 3-4 nics and cuts and had 2 flats in the past three weeks. I also only had a little over a 1k miles on the tires, but in the end I decided to buy a new set of tires and I will use the old tire on the trainer this winter so it doesn't go to waste.

They should be visible.  When they are no longer visible you should get new tires.

As someone else said, a good set of tires can last a long time.  You usually have obvious wear in them or cuts before they wear out.

I replace them when I see a really big gash (happens fairly seldom) or when I'm changing a tire and the tire just FEELS thin...trust me...it's obvious.  Though I do usually go to the LBS for verification.

Yes, multiple flats can be a sign that the tire is going south.

I was actually going through them at a fairly good clip a few years back...so much so that when my favorite tire was on sale I bought four of them.  And...three of them are still packaged up in my bike room.  SO weird.  Just haven't needed a new one lately.  I hope they don't go bad!
