Subject: What birthday present to get for a friend who's a relatively new triathlete?

I've got a b-day party for a casual friend of mine this weekend, who is an occsaional triathlete, and training for a race in 8 weeks. 

We're more casual acquaintances than anything else, but I thought it would be cool if I could get them a useful inexpensive tri-related gift. Like <$50.

Anybody got any neat ideas?

also our area's local bike shops have waterproof maps for local bike rides. Handy index card size that can fit in a jersey pocket. Got those from my inlaws and still have them. Not sure if all areas have them, but realy cool

Thats hard without knowing what he already has. I think gift certificates are kind of impersonal but at least he wouldn't end up with duplicates of anything.

See if their local tri production company has gift certificates.   For my birthday this year, my dad got me a gift cert to Setup Events (which is the main NC/SC tri production company) and I used that money to immediately sign up for two races I wanted to do but couldn't afford yet.  A $50 gift cert would be the majority of an entry fee to a sprint/oly.

my wife got me this for christmas this past year and let me say - it's the gift that gives ALL YEAR ROUND!  Let me give an x2 to the year subscription to the magazine.

Her note made it so awesome to... "1 year of the most stimulating bathroom reading this side of an X rating"
