Anyone doing this race?
It will be a "Time Trial" type. I am looking forward to seeing what that is like.

sorry if I sound stupid ...

do you guys mean this will be a draft-allowed race?  ITU style?  or that you race in teams and your time is based on your team's last person to cross the finish?

either way sounds intersting but lame (I'm just fueling the ITU/USAT debate here)  HEHEHE.  Seriously what's the detail on the format?  I might wanna come down to SoFL to "see' this.

where did you see that they are definitely doing it that way? did i miss something in an email?

the way they described it in one of the emails, the start is time trial format, i.e., individual starts staggered, everyone goes off alone, with 3 seconds or something like that in between. i don't know how they're going to decide order (beyond the elite types).

part of the purpose of this is to PREVENT drafting on the bike and to spread out the field.

never mind, i found it buried in the last e-mail, here's the description:

Format Changed to Time Trial

The votes are in and over 60% of you wanted to try a time trial triathlon, so we are making it happen. You are probably wondering why we are calling it the Grudge Match Triathlon though, so let's review the benefits of the time trial style of racing:

1. We are taking the safest venue in the sport, Tradewinds, and making it even safer by eliminating the wave starts. Each person starts by themself and we start people at about 3 second intervals. That means that we can start 600 people in 30 minutes. This eliminates all kicking and punching normally associated with triathlon wave starts. Note that there will still be 1 wave for all of the Elites to race head-to-head and the Duathlon remains a mass start.

2. We do not start in any specific order. When you come to the start you get in line and you will start in that order and we can start several people at the same time in their own mini-wave if you so choose. This is where the grudge match concept comes into play. If you and your buddies want to race head-to-head with each other, you can all start at the same time, even if you aren't in the same category or normally in the same wave! Maybe you want to race with your spouse-now you can! A coach can now start alongside all of his/her pupils! Want to race with Mom and/or Dad?

All normal USAT rules still apply, especially on the bike. No drafting, no blocking, etc. If you are starting with others and are in the "just finish and have fun" mode rather than the "kick butt" mode, we ask that you start at the end and let the agressive racers burn up the road in front of you.

Not sure how it will achieve the goal of "spreading out" since there is no official order for starting.
However, it should be interesting at least.
Looking forward to it as I enjoyed the course last time.

there will be lots of people in the water at the same time but no mass start, so it should reduce some of the combat by only having to pass those who are in front rather than the side to side battle...I don't really have a problem with the mass start at Tradewinds because there is lots of room to spread out, but I'm looking forward to the change of pace and being able to line up with my training partners for a race.

Hi all, this is going to be my first event in over 20 years and almost didn't register for it because i was intimidated by the times others have done this course in from 2008.  But I figured that I gotta get my "feet wet" at some point and was going to wait until September to do my first Tri.  I've registered now so no turning back.  Any pointers/recommendations are greatly appreciated (what time should i get there on race day, food before/during, what should i have at the transition area?).

Thank you.

Hey Nico....Welcome to BT...

I really don't know about your swimming/biking/running background...and..."Everybody is different"....but...this one is only a Sprint...it's a short Race....1/4 mile swim / 10 miles bike / 2.50 miles run...I know...It sounds easy for many of us...but...Take it easy and I only can recommend to you:

Try to get early there in between 5:30 and 6:00 am...in that way you can set-up your stuff in Transition (only the ones that you will need for the Race)...be familiar with Transition and the Exit/Entrance...and...check exactly where is your rack area....

Off Course...Check in the MultiRace.com site the Swim / Bike/ Run Course

Enjoy and Have fun...and....remember to smile for the photographers...LOL

Good Luck!!!

Ha! Those are pretty cool! Maybe they will be a little bigger than the old ones. I always seem to end up with a headache after the swim from those insanely tight caps they had.

Nico Jones,
The course is a nice closed course, a great way to get back into it.
The bike course doesn't have a lot of long straight shots. There are a couple of tight turns as well.
The swim is great, straight shot, but the water tends to be a little murky, although it is fresh water. Transition is right next to swim exit, so not far to run.
The run is OK. Not a lot of shade at the start and then it is under cover with no straight look to finish, so if you are wondering where to  "push" at the end, it is hard to know.
I think transition closes at like 6:25 or so, so get there and get organized.

See you there!

I registered for this last March, so I'm in. I still think I'll wait until most people have started before I go... I don't want to be run over (and I so would....)
