Trying to plan my clothing choices for FL.  This does not include putting ON a layer (jacket, etc) -- this is a full change (e.g. swimsuit to bike shorts or bike shorts to running shorts).  Thanks!

OK- when I did IM FL in '06 we had a cold front blow in the day before the race.  It got cold!  Originally I wasn't going to change but I decided the night before I would because I didn't want to freeze on the bike.  So I wore my suit to swim in under my wetsuit and did a full change in T1.  That was a NIGHTMARE.  I had a really hard time getting on my tri top because my skin was still wet- even after drying off with a wet towel. I fought with my top forever until someone next to me offered to help- which was just awesome.  If you can get a volunteer then it's a lot easier because they can really help you out and keep you organized.  Sherri (oliveview) has been volunteering for years at that race and is an awesome volunteer in the women's chage tent.  You can also PM her if you have any ?'s or want her to help you out any way she can on race day.

Anyways, for T2, I changed out my socks and my shorts- I put on a fresh pair of tri shorts, mostly because I had peed on myself multiple times on the bike and just wanted fresh tri shorts for the run

It all kinda comes down to personal preference.  If you want fresh clothes, then change. If you don't care then don't change.  And of course it kinda depends on the weather as well.  I will recommend that you bring both warm/cold gear just in case the weather changes.  I'm glad I had everything because the weather did change and atheltes were scurrying aroudn the day before at the expo to buy arm warmers and such and most vendors had run out.

I'm doing IM Cozumel this Nov. and don't plan to change at all.  It's easier with that IM because the temp is going to be pretty constant on race day- start hot and end hot.  It's not a wetsuit legal swim so I don't have to worry about taking that off.  So hopefully I can redeem myself with some shorter and more simple transitions there and not change at all- which so far is the plan.

I think after IM FL I wouldn't change in T1 unless I HAD TO- mainly because I had an avg swim time and the tent was packed out when I got there.   There wasn't room for another body and I had to stand the entire time and it took me awhile to even find a good place to stand.  People get totally nekkid in those tents and that's just something I want enough personal space for- which was hard to find.  It was so hard to make sure that you or someone else didn't step all over your stuff and I really didn't have any place to lay anything out.  It was very chaotic.

Good luck at IM FL- that was my first IM so I have fond memories of PCB!

I did a full change S-B and B-R.

I went with bibs and a full-zip jersey because I didn't want to get burned on my lower back (turns out it was cold and overcast, but I was already committed to that solution before the weather was forecast).  It wasn't hard to put the jersey on (I wanted the full-zip so it'd be easier to make bathroom stops).  I wasn't fast in T1, but it wasn't because of the jersey.

I changed into running shorts and a tri-top for the run (along with fresh socks).  I had a running singlet, but the temps were about 60F and rain was threatening so I opted for the tri-top.  In hindsight, I should have kept the bike jersey (I'd injured my shoulder on the bike and wasn't relishing the prospect of moving my arm enough to put the top on, but I wasn't thinking real clearly at that moment, so I went for the pain and suffering.

I have thought of doing that on a long ride just to see if I could bring myself to do it. Then I looked down at my water bottles and figured I would end up all over them.

Did for my first one. Think I'm going to stay with the same clothes next time around. Don't really mind running in tri shorts.

Ok, it sounds like you DON'T usually get your special needs stuff back, but I assume you do get back the items from the changing tent?  If so, I could bring a pair of running shorts and make the call on how yucky I feel during transition.

Most IMs you do get your sn bags back especially like FL where your run sn bag is right by transition..not so sure of bike sn bag as they bring it out via truck out on the course. LP you get them back as they are close to transition as well. I'm doing Canada and I've been told over and over you will get neither back. Each race is unique so you need to check on your IM thread if you'll get your sn stuff back.

I wore tri shorts and sports bra under my wetsuit and put on my bike top in T1. In T2 I changed shorts and switched to my BT tri top.

This one I'm thinking no changing but have a spare pair of shorts in T2 just in case my shorts get nasty from the bike.

I'm training for my first and I'm planning on changing for each discipline.  I'll be more comfortable in a high end pair of bike shorts and I want to put some nutrition and a spare tubbie in my jersey.  I figure I might as well run in running shorts since I'll be changing.  If I was hoping to go real fast I would wear the same clothes, but I'm in the over 12 hour crowd and I might as well focus on comfort.

I kept the same outfit,, but washed and dried it real quick in transition so it was nice & clean... you can't beat that just out of the dryer feeling in my opinion

Nope.  Same tri top and tri shorts all day.

(Sadly, though, I still had to sacrifice time in T1 wrapping my injured hamstring, since I didn't think a waterlogged-from-the-swim elastic bandage would be very comfortable on the bike.)

E.T.A.:  I came prepared with arm warmers and toe covers since it was a little chilly starting out on the bike, but opted not to wear them.

It was a little chilly at FL last year so I put arm warmers on for the bike. The sun goes down early so I put on long sleeves for the run.

I know I am going to get laughed at but I am an IM first timer and I have to ask because I am curious.  I am thinking about changing shorts between b/r, but when I train I don't wear underwear.  Do people just strip down to nothing and change or what is the protocol for this??

No laughing here - that is a legitmate question. There are separate male and female change tents at most IM races - and no one is very interested in anything but their own space. So you just pick a chair and change to whatever extent you want.

** but best to move away fromthe open door-flap before starting to strip down.

Yep! I was a T2 change tent volunteer at MOO last year and the girls just stripped and in a lot of cases, I had to help them because they were so tired. There was tons of nudity but it's in a really comfortable environment and everyone is so focused on the race that no one seemed to be the least bit uncomfortable.

I did my 1st IM last month and I had planned on wearing my bright orange bike top (so my family could spot me) and my Desoto 400 mile bike shorts for the whole race. I decided to wear a tri top for the swim because it did not want the bike top sleeves to rub me under the wetsuit. I changed into the bike top in T1. I had run 20 miles in the Desoto bike shorts in training and they felt fine, but I discovered they gave me a severe case of monkey butt during the IM run. The pad chaffed me up pretty good which may have been due to the fact that I never got off the bike during the 112 miles and I peed about 7 times. I didn't train doing that.

NO I did not change : Sports bra, tri top and tri shorts +/- various layers (AKA arm warmers etc)  2 IMs

YES : people get totally naked in the changing tent

People get all concerned about changing into dry stuff after the swim.  Before you choose that option take a shower and try to put on a sports bra when you are 1/2 dry...ITS REALLY REALLY HARD.  esp if you have breasts and are not flat chested but even the flat chested chicks were struggling.  Add in a dark crowded space in total chaos.

Sherri (oliveveiw) has been the team captain for the IMFL womens changing tent for a few years. She says KEEP IT SIMPLE.  The pros have almost nothing in their bags.  We all know IM is going to hurt and people want to do everything to make it hurt the least amount possible.  My theory is I am going to get soaked with sweat on the bike anyway why bother change?  I train in tri shorts for the bike-run all the time so its not a leap for me. I don't even own any bike shorts. Like they say train like you race   See ya there

LOL- yeah that part can be tricky.  At FL the headwind was actually an advantage because everything just flew behind me   Of course I had to make sure nobody was behind me.  But I kinda timed it to where I could ditch the water bottle that got anything on it and grab a fresh bottle of water from the bottle drop.

There is no modesty in those changing tents.  If you need to you can even slap from camois butter on or bodyglide in certain places and nobody cares.  Which is good because you gotta do what you gotta do to make it through such a long day.

I was amazed at the people who run 26 miles in spandex!  I took me 30 seconds to strip off my biking shorts and put on running shorts.  I actually got a comment from two spectators who said "Hey, here's a guy who's wearing running shorts!  Thank you!  We're sick of seeing all the spandex!"

If people don't want to see spandex, then perhaps Ironman isn't the spectator sport for them.

I have actually thought about changing into run shorts for the run, sine I do all of my long runs in running shorts, but I chafe in running shorts a little too much for my liking, where spandex I don't. . ..so spandex it will be.

I change in T1 and T2 and my Transition times are on par or a little faster than others.  Just go in with a purpose, get naked if need be, get done what needs to get done and get out. . . . .

I did not do a full change.  But I put a dry bike jersey on in T1...swam in a sports bra and my tri shorts.  Really only did this because I had a sleevless suit and wanted to wear this specific short sleeve jersey for the race.

It was hard.  I don't care how well you try to dry yourself...putting on clothes when you are wet is a nightmare!

Honestly, I really feel like not changing is totally the way to go.  But I could see a dry shirt or shorts before the run...I don't think that would be all that hard.  But I would seriously recommend not trying to fully change after the swim.  Dang hard to do.

Edited to comment on Rogillio's post...If I didn't wear spandex for the whole run my thighs would chafe so badly I couldn't walk for days.  Spandex on the run is a total MUST for some folks!

It should be noted here that the women's change tent is a totally different animal than the men's change tent.  When I came in off the swim I had to walk through a field of dudes all sitting OUTSIDE the tent doing their transition because their tent was so full.  So I would hate to see a dude plan on a full change and then have to wait to find a spot inside.  Just another planning factor.

I don't think it's an issue for the women...our tent doesn't really fill up.  I came out right in the main swim pack and I had plenty of room in there.  Didn't get a volunteer right away, but plenty of room to do my thing.
