Subject: New from Alberta Canada!
Hey everyone!  I am just starting my training come this fall.  Our season for competition is short but we have a long time to train in the late fall and winter.   I did a fun indoor tri this winter and loved it.  Any suggestions for heart rate monitor watches used with triathlon training and competition?

Welcome to BT! and the world of Tri's!!

My suggestion is to spend some time in the forums and read all you can.  If there are specific questions do a forum search...more than likely someone else had the question - - you're definitely not alone!  Also, check out if there is a tri club in your area.  Also! Don't forget to check out the forums for your area..there may be others around you!  I know there are some Canadians on here - aquagirl is great..send her a PM!  Tell her I "sent" you :-D

Do a forum search for heart rate monitors or go to gear - I'm sure there is lots of talk about 'em!

Good luck!

Welcome from Calgary. Lots of info on here!! I just bought the Garmin 310Xt. Bit of overkill, but awesome watch.

Hello everyone, and thanks for the greetings.  There is sooo much info on this site I can hardly believe it is so accessible to the public.  I am really looking forward to training this winter as my summer was toast with a knee injury and just had surgery this week.  Ouch.  But in the mean time I think I found a watch I like.  It is the Suunto T3C Black Arrow.  It is due out late this summer/early fall.  Anyone hear of anything bad from this watch?  I looked at the Garmin watches too, but I wasn't sure if it was overkill or not.

More specifically I am from Camrose, about an hour southeast of Edmonton.  Happy training!

I don't have a fancy expensive watch myself (nor a HRM, nor a bike computer, heck I don't even have cadence - I like to train nekid;-) ...
BUT I know some pros out here that are sponsored by Suunto and they seem to like their stuff. Heard no complaints - but I'm certainly no expert.

After doing some more research I think that you got a good product Trevor.  Where did you buy it from?  I checked with MEC and they don't have it in yet.  Even if it seems a bit overkill it will make you work hard so one day you will need it. Smile

Welcome to BT errow! You're in the right place. As others have said, if you're looking for help, there is a wealth of info here. I'm just outside Edmonton myself, so maybe we'll see you on the start line one day!

I have a Garmin 305 that I use for running. I used it once during a sprint and nearly dropped it during the bike while trying to put it on with chilled hands. I find the less you have during a race, the better.

cheers, jman

Awesome!  I ordered mine from MEC, but they are still back ordered.  I won't be using it in the next month anyways.  I like that it is completely waterproof.

That is so true.  The less stuff you have to deal with the better when you are a beginner.  Just trying to get from swim-> bike-> run in an efficient manner is enough of a challenge.

It is funny, you never know who you will meet and where you will catch up with people.  Good luck with your training.
