ummmm no. I was thinking of something else...

I know...I was just taking it one step further, so in addition to the juice, Sammy had some corked bats. Wait though, did they ever catch Sammy? I don't recall and don't really care. For Bolt though, hasn't he consistently tested clean? Is he really a man? :-)

Nah, this is Track and Field.  They actually have measuring standards that they use and their World Record numbers actually mean something. Money mouth

Slight headwind too.  (If it was a tail-wind it wouldn't count as the WR).

I think he is just one of "those" athletes that comes along every generation or two.  Most people can either have a fast turnover or a long stride length.  He's got both, which makes him a super-dangerous presence on the track.

I sure hope he's clean ...... the sport needed someone like him to come up!

Imagine if he and Michael Johnson could have faced off! Now THAT would have been something to behold. I would bet one of them would have broken 19 pretty soon. You know what, Bolt will probably break it soon enough. I haven't seen the race. Was his going flat out until the end or did he relax a little?

I think we're watching the manifestation of growth hormones they put in poultry and livestock these days.

Yeah.  Johnson would have been skulking home with his gold shoes hidden underneath his shirt.  They aren't even in the same league ..... no one is right now.

Hell, Gay ran the 3rd fastest 100 EVER and still got beat by over a 1/10th .......

Bolt is on another planet compared to anyone esle.

I too hope he is clean.

And I think you are right.  Traditionally, the shorter athletes have dominated the short sprints.  Conventional wisdom was that they could get up and out of the blocks and up to full speed faster than someone that was taller.  Bolt seems to be the exception to that rule.  In the 100, he happened to be out of the blocks either dead even or slightly ahead.  And then, once he was up to speed, it was all over.

He does have the beautiful long stride with the ridiculously fast turn over.  And he also happens to run very, VERY relaxed.  Watch the replay of the 100.  His upper body, face, head, neck, etc, are all very relaxed compared to the other runners.  It is as if he is channeling as much energy as possible to the lower half.  AND I happen to think he still didn't push it as hard as he could have.  Again, watching the 100m replay, he continued to look to his right to see where Gay was.  And knowning he was still ahead of him, I don't think he went as fast as he could have.

All that being said, I truly hope that he is clean because he is so much damn fun to watch run.

so...taking clyde harts method to find the fastest 400 bolt is capable of...

take his fastest 200 (19.19) x 2 = 38.38 + 3.5 seconds = 41.88

now that would be crazy fast, can it happen?! he'd better keep eating those jamaican yams

IMO, I think that Bolt could break the 400 WR but not by as much as some would think. Using the formula you stated above Michael Johnson was capable of 42.14 yet he "only ran" 43.18 and he was a 200-400 guy where Bolt is a 100-200 runner. He is going to lose a little bit of speed when he changes his training from pure speed to building more strength and endurance for the 400. I could see him going under 43.0 though. But this makes me wonder if Bolt is capable of it though; Johnson's best 100 was 10.09 yet he ran 19.32 for the 200 and 43.18 for 400. The gap closes the longer the distance between his times and Bolt's. So is the 400 a distance where Johnson would have the advantage?

While Phelps won everything he entered, his performances were very very close in some of the events.  Bolt has blown away everyone else in his races.

So I'd say Bolt.

while clyde hart did agree with his formula and say that he felt johnson couldve gone faster...if you add 1 second its dangerously close!

so could we agree on 42.88?

either way its awesome!

bolt is a ton more fun to watch!

I disagree, I think Phelps is more fun to watch.  Then again, I love watching swimming more than anything, so maybe I am biased

But Bolt is really something spectacular.

Yes, I would say he is capable of that time.
