Subject: Wet shoes, wet socks and long runs
I'm prepping for a 70.3 which has me running longer and farther than I ever have. Last night after a 6-miler I peel off my socks and shoes and both are completely soaked. This is pretty normal for being that I live in FL and sweat like crazy. I'll drop 5-6 pounds in an hour and all that sweat is dripping down and soaking my feet. I'm scared to death of blistering after a bad run at an Oli last March where I didn't change socks after the bike and stuck my wet, soggy feet into my shoes and blistered badly just half-way thru the run. I changed shoes and my running style as a result of that experience and haven't had any blisters since May.Now that I'm starting to increase my run times I'm worried that I might start blistering again because my feet are drenched after the first hour. I'm a little less worried about stand alone runs and more concerned about race day, where my feet will have plenty of time to soften up after the swim and the bike. Should I think about carrying extra socks for race day or for longer runs? Has anyone ever changed shoes during a run to keep their feet dry?

I have a similar problem. As you said, on stand alone runs, it isn't a huge problem.
For me, on longer runs I wear those injini socks-the ones that look like gloves for your feet.
I have never blistered in them and I sweat TONS.
However, they would take some effort to get into in transition.
Another thought is to change socks, but that won't help as much.
Or, get on the recent trend and go barefoot!

Another thing to try is to load up your feet with bodyglide before you put your socks on.I too sweat a ton and although its uncorfortable I don't blister wearing bodyglide.

I have found that some shoes "breathe" better than others depending on the upper material. I've had shoes that trap moisture and some with a light mesh that seems to aid in evaporation and minimize moisture retention. I just got a pair of racing flats that even have ventilation in the soles.

I have some questions about gear.  Are you using good synthetic socks that dry quickly, and shoes with good ventilation?

I swear by these "blister proof" two layer socks.

I sweat a ton too and got bad blisters during several marathons. I found something that worked to prevent this problem. Before a real long run I will rub antiperspirant all over my feet. This greatly reduces the wetness and the chances of blisters. I think this would work best for training and standalone running races.

In my first HIM I changed socks in T2. If blisters are a big concern it would be better to take a few extra seconds in T2 than to suffer badly on the run.

Are you sure that it's your feet sweating that causes your socks and shoes to get soaked? I sweat heavily too but for me it's actually sweat dripping down and running down my legs and collecting in the shoes that's the major problem....

Yes, it's my feet. They sweat just from wearing shoes even when I'm not doing anything. My legs sweat too, but I think most of that either evaporates off or is flung off during the motion of running. Anyway, try what I suggested. What do you have to lose?
