Subject: RE: New chain/cassette 5 weeks from race? csharp1171 - 2009-08-23 1:16 PM I have started having problems with my gears jumping if I accelerate really hard. It only happens in two or three gears. I recently had an annual tune up and the bike shop claimed the chain was still ok and they mentioned nothing about the cassette being worn. I've put give or take 3,000 miles on the current chain/cassette. My next race is not for 5 weeks so I am wondering if I should replace the chain and cassette now or wait until after the race. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I replaced my chain/cassette the night before my race. In fact, I tried 3 different cassettes the week before my race. Which 3 gears are you having problems with? If they're all at one end of the derailleur's travel, then I'd say your derailleur is out of adjustment already. Also, you might have a stiff link or other problem with the chain. watch the chain as it enters/exits the derailleur and see if you can see one. It can be pretty obvious. Give everything a good cleaning and see if it improves. Or, just take it back to the LBS and tell them: I just had a tuneup but my bike is jumping gears under load. Can you please check it out? Cassette/Chain will probably run you $60 or so, and 5 weeks is plenty of time for any compatibility issues to rear their heads. |
