Subject: Torn Ligiments in ankle
Hi
I've been doing Tri's, sprints and oly for almost 10 years now.
In March I fell on some ice and hurt my ankle.
I have been working through our medical system and now have it confirmed with an MRI that have 2 torn ligaments in my ankle.
I have not been running since March, I just can't run.  Walking on flat surfaces is OK.
Has anyone got experience with  ligament repair?
I have not met with the orthopedic surgeon yet, but from what I've read it doesn't sound good.
Any positive recovery stories out there?  I could use a boost.
Thanks

Torn ligament on MRI = ankle sprain.  What "medical system" are you speaking of?  Unless you have instability which can only be diagnosed my physical exam and/or stress films you have an 80% chance of getting better with PT.  That said my ankle instability pts are some of my happiest pts after having repair.  Like I said the majority of people do fine after some PT.

I had reconstructive surgery on my ankle four years ago and, despite the 6 month recovery period, am extremely happy I did it.

That being said, I also had years of ankle instability and had sprained my ankle 8 or so times in the year leading up to surgery.  The issue (extremely lax and torn ligaments in my ankle) was diagnosed by two orthopedics (via physical exam and stress x-rays) before sending me to an ankle specialist for surgery.  To my understanding PT is the way to go for the vast majority of ankle sprains and surgery in only needed in rare situations.

Thanks.  Your comments have put a smile on my face.
The medical system is pure Canadian, very good, but slow.
PT and time, sounds good to me.
I needed some reassurance, you both provided.  Thanks again.
