20 years of road riding and it was bound to happen. Frankly, I'm surprised it took this long. At the very end of a 100km ride today I was hit by a Lincoln Towncar that was attempting to cross the road I was traveling down. Yes I was wearing a helmet as everyone should do.

I was traveling 18 mph according to the powertap record and I remember looking up and seeing the front quarterpanel of a car right in front of me. It looks like he was trying to beat 2 lines of cars across the road and didn't see the bike. I had time to get on the brakes very briefly before impact. I rolled up onto the hood, I remember dropping a very loud F-bomb as I was in the air, slid up into the windshield and cracked it, and then slid forward ending up on the road about 6 or 8 feet in front of the car. My bike ended up flying about 30 feet.

Off duty cop happened to be waiting to turn the other way and saw the whole thing which makes for a very credible witness. He called 911 and the paramedics came and checked me out. I spent the afternoon getting very boring neck and shoulder xrays. My whole right side of my body is sore and my shoulder, hip, and knee are bruised and swelling up. Doctor wrote me a vicodin prescription but I'm hoping advil takes care of it.

Apparently I have a good rolling/landing reflex because I'm not sure I could have taken the impact much more cleanly. I really can't believe my collarbone survived. My front fork is sheered off, the handlebars are crooked, the brakes levers and shifter are bent, the crank and chain are a mess, too.

I guess now it's advil time, deal with insurance, and then assess what parts of the bike can be saved and what will need to be replaced (most I guess). Looks like my road bike will be getting some love for the next few weeks.

If you're curious what a crash looks like on powertap here's a 6 second snapshot... 18 to 4mph in < 1 second.

WOW! You did survive! Lucky you!!!!

Poor bike though. So, we get pictures of that too? It sounds gruesome man.

Happy to hear the lady was caught and you had a solid witness. Could have been much worse.

Glad it wasn't worse!!

It looks like you tried turning as well, that's a pretty clean sideways looking break on those forks...

wow!  I guess you had a lot of karma points.

Now I would be on the phone with the driver's insurance company (prob what you meant).

THe replacement cost of the bike is really irrelevant/  You really are a lucky azz dude!

Yes, his front quarterpanel, hood, and windshield are thrashed. Bike took out quarterpanel, shoulder crunched hood, and based on my memory and the swelling I think it was my left knee that broke his windshield.

Wow, really glad you're ok.  Too many stories lately of cyclists getting killed.

Looks like quite the impact.  Will you trust a frame that was in a colission like that?  Lots of forces.  I might consider a whole new bike.  Wouldn't want it to fail on some steep downhill in a few months.

Hope you heal quickly!

Glad to hear you made it with some bumps and bruises and nothing else major! So how exactly does a rodie get such tuck and roll reflexes in a crash?
My husband is convinced you are a mountain biker

I will say seeing the pics of the bike is horrific.

Hope you can make it though with the advil - again, glad to hear you are ok.

Yikes, amazing picture.  Good to hear you avoided major injury.  It goes to show that you can be very experienced and still get nailed.  Far into a ride is a tough time because you are somewhat spent and maybe not anticipating a bad move by a driver as quickly as you would if completely fresh.

I almost got broadsided a week ago under very similar circumstances (60 miles in), but fortunately the guy was coming from the left and I had time to scream really, really loud at him long enough for him to notice me/us and slam on his brakes.  My buddies behind me were glad I saw it coming because none of them noticed the driver coming across the road at us on a cross street.
