Subject: Speedplay X2 vs X5

I have speedplay X2s on one bike. I'm getting a pair of speedplays for my other bike which is solely a training bike.

If I get cheaper X5s for the 2nd bike, will I notice any difference?

The x2 has stainless spindles, the x5 are croMo (but you probably already knew that). My understanding is the x5 either has lower quality bearings, or there is something I don't understand about croMo spindles that causes bearings to wear faster. In any event, it seems like bearing life is the big difference, but speedplay pedals are totally serviceable, just expect to do it a little more frequently.

I have both, the X2 on my roadie and X5 on my Tri bike. I have never noticed a difference.

magic:

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I read about the bearing on the website and it made absolutely no sense to me what the difference would be.

But the entire question is a bit moot for me now.  I just found a good cheap pair of X2s on craigslist.  :-)

I have speedplay on both bikes but have noticed something strange. On my tri bike the pedals disengage by rotating my heels out, but on the road bike the heels need to be rotated in.

anyone know how to rectify this.

Different shoes?

If so, take a look at the cleats.  I'm guessing they're not straight on the shoes.

If not, I don't have an idea.

I just got a pair of speedplays as my first set of clipless pedals. To unclip one of my feet, I have to rotate my foot a lot further than the other.  Is there some way to adjust that?

Look at the shoes.

Make sure that the cleats are straight; or at least pointed forwards at similar angles.

Also, check the tightness of the screws in the cleat.  Speedplay recommends using locktite, and not tightening the screws more than 1/4 turn.

Not to sound like a smart , but is the left pedal on the left side?

Yes the pedals are on the correct sides.  I adjusted the right cleat a bit and I think that helped a little.  I am taking it out for a ride tomorrow so we will really see then.
