I have had a great season to date, but am nursing an overuse injury in my foot.  My doctor says he wants me to be pain-free for 6 weeks before running, and I am currently on week 2.5.  I am registered for a sprint on 9/5/09, and can't decide what to do. (A relay is not an option...I checked already.

If I run and my foot starts hurting again, I'm back to week one of my six weeks no running.  If I DNF after the bike...I DNF which would suck.  If I walk the run, I look slow and might finish last in my AG, but would probably have fun cheering everyone on.

I would bag the race and simply volunteer at the race.  Is one race really worth risking re-injuring yourself?  If you just have to race then swim and call it quits.  Surprised that the biking wouldn't irritate your foot.    Either way one race now or risk the injury getting worse and missing multiple races later.

Good luck

Why go to the doctor if you are going to ignore his/her advice and run 3.5 weeks ahead of time and ask people on an Internet forum?

You have an overuse injury, and you want to run before the doctor says you should?

sheesh.

You should remove doing the whole race from the poll... It's not an option.

I guess it depends how bad you want to do that race.

If the race on 9/5/09 is important to you and the last of the season I would go for it. If in pain, I would stop. DNF is not the end of the world. If you push through the pain, worst case, you have all off season to recuperate. This is assuming you will just reset the counter and not cause any more permanent damage.

If there is another race around end of September or October, I would skip 9/5/09 and do that.

If it's not that important to you, I would skip it.

If any risk of more permanent damage, obviously skip it.

Great idea to volunteer...I hadn't even thought of that.  Thanks!

Don't race. And, depending on what the injury is, you might want to consider not volunteering. Volunteering can be tiring and require a few hours of standing and walking, which can aggravate injuries. You might get home only to find the pain has returned a bit. Just focus on getting better.
