What % of your maximum effort do you expend during each segment of a Sprint or Olympic distance Triathlon?

Select % in each category

For those of you who voted for 100% in a discipline, I'm curious to hear what your personal definition is of 100% effort in that discipline. I have run my last 1600m in a sprint tri (with a four mile run) with a locked up (I could visibly see the cramp) right quad maintaining a 6:40/mile pace. Extremely painful. I chose 95% for the run. I understand, everyone has their own rate of perceived exertion, but I just can't tell myself I have EVER performed at 100% of my maximum effort, because:

-100% in the swim = horrible bike, horrible run
-100% in the bike = horrible run
-100% in the run = you will need to see a doctor, quicker race time, injury

My perception of 100% maximum effort equates to whatever action you are speaking of (swim, bike, run, ______), when you finish that action, you have NOTHING left. Someone needs to carry you away. Pain is irrelevant--after 100% effort, pain is the least of your worries. I reserve 100% effort for the sandbox when I am unarmed and alone and a suicide bomber is chasing me with his Mercedes. Only then will I S,B,R at 100%. Opinions?

Yeah we need more clarification on "maximum effort".I assume you want to compare something like effort for a 1500m standalone swim vs 1500m olympic swim. But if you are talking about a maximum effort within the context of an olympic tri then that is less because you are pacing yourself over a longer race. Or a maximum effort where are running from a guy with a bomb and not concerned about pacing yourself for a distance.

Yes, thats kind of what I was thinking.  Max for the distance.

Possibly a better way for me to have phrased this question is:

How much energy do you reserve in each discipline in order to remain efficient in the other disciplines during a race.

This yea i have been going 100% on the swim, and you think that because you don't use your arms for the rest of the race outta the water that you would do fine.....gotta watch out from now on. My running is always maxed out!! my breathing limits me.   My bike is only as good as my legs feel....usually pretty awesome though

If it is a sprint, I don't reserve anything.  I keep asking myself, are you hurting?  If the answer is no, I'm not going hard enough.  I've seen people miss a podium by seconds at this distance.

In a sprint, I'm pretty much red-lining (100%) the whole way.  In an oly, I go at about 90% for the swim and bike, probably 95% for 3/4 of the run, then 100% for the last 1-2 miles.
