13 miles!   Non-stop and no walking.
I know some of you will say "so what". but for me (50 years old) it is a world record.  Also I'm not sore or stiff today. That's a good sign.
My half marathon race is in 7 weeks. So with 1 long run per weekend, for the next 5 or 6 weeks.
Should I try to get myself up to 17 or 18 miles?

Good job!

I'm only 42 & I can't seem to get up to 10 miles.  Mostly the balls of my feet start to hurt -- I'll just keep tinkering with my shoes & socks until I find the right combination....Hoping to find it before I try a half in October.

Major congrads!  My first 13.1 I overtrained and was glad I did.  Made the race very easy.  What I would be careful about is just making sure you don't get hurt.  Would not ever increase more than 10% in one week.

See what happens when you put some fine pace booty in front of a dirty old man?  ;-)  j/k  Congrats!  I'm sure it's a confidence booster to know that your body is good for the distance and you have 7 weeks to improve on the speed.

Man that's awesome! I'm training for my first HM too and I'm not even planning on getting up to the 17 or 18 miles you're talking about. Is this your first HM in 7 weeks? If so, it looks like you'll most likely be whooping some butt when you go!

Good Job!

I did my first 13.1 race in April, following a novice training plan.  Longest training run on plan was 11 miles.  I bonked at mile 10 on race day from going out to hard and an unusually hot spring day.  My next 13.1 is in 8 weeks and I plan on training beyond race distance so I can hopefully finish strong.

Great Job!  Now my longest run ever, 7 miles just last week, seems like peanuts!  At 32, I'm going to bust my to get further than you!  Need to find myself some of that pace booty, or someone to chase me.

Nice going on the 13 miler. It will be helpful to know you can go that far. Since you have no logs I can't really comment on the wisdom of going up to 17-18 miles, other than to say for a HM you really don't need to go that far in training. If you're already running 40+ miles/week it won't hurt to go that far, if you're doing less than 20 miles/week it would be foolish.

x1,000,000 - Keep up the good work and I would not really push on the extra mileage unless your training plan calls for it!

Thanks All.
Yeah. The plan has me going up to 17 miles. But it's the same plan that had me doing 12 X 800's. I found out in another thread that to many 800's is a bad idea. So that's why I'm questioning the plan. I think what I'll do is add 1 mile per week for 3 weeks, then back off to the 13 miles again

I used this as a guide.http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/half_marathon.html

But as usual I make it up as I go yet still following the "idea" of a plan.

nice job! 13 miles is a long way!

i've only done it once (HM back in November) and it was brutal!

Keep following your plan, but I don't know about needing to run 17+ miles for a HM...that almost sounds like a Full Mary plan!

Good luck!

Great job!! As a fellow gentlemen near 50 I can truly appreciate the accomplishment. The no soreness part afterwards is probably the biggest victory.

With a HM coming up there is no purpose to increasing your mileage further. Focus more on quality on your long runs. By that I mean think about your form, relaxation, pacing, nutrition, hydration. Your speed should naturally increase. By increasing your long run beyond where you are at all you do is increase recovery time that may interfere with your normal weekly training goals.

The F.I.R.S.T. plan has a max run of 15 miles in the 5th to last week of the plan.  Long runs for weeks 7 (this week) and on are as follows:

7 - 14 miles
6 - 10 miles
5 - 15 miles
4 - 10 miles
3 - 12 miles
2 - 8 miles
1 - race

Congratulations! 13 miles is tough no matter how fit you are.

I really don't understand why you would try to go for 17-18 miles if you goal is to do a 1/2M... Clearly, you can run the distance already, so why not concentrate on interval efforts to build strength and speed? 2 weeks out should be a week where you run some distance, but take it easy and the week before, go for easy, medium to short runs, just to keep comfortable. Then go ahead and rock that race!

Wow!  Awesome accomplishment.   Not a lot of people can say they have run 13 miles without stopping.  (I have, but that was almost 20 years ago)!   Great Job!
