I notice that many of you guys do several events per year.  Do you train for each one or do you used the event as an actual workout.  This year I just was able to do a sprint and i will be doing a run event before the end of the season.

I really don't have any set training at all.  I simply fit in what I can when I can and as events get closer try to put emphasis on what needs the most work for the next event.

I also "blocked" a lot of my events together this year.  Many are within a week or two of the other so I just build from one race to the next using any gains from them to try and improve the next one.

You can only really "peak" for two and sometimes three events a year.  The rest will have to be filler B or C races.  And that is only assuming you do use a concrete and well developed plan.

Otherwise you end up like me just kind of doing whatever you can day to day and showing up on race with no clue how the day will turn out.  Not usually what I would recommend.

I don't really have an "A" race...I just like to work out, and I enjoy racing. I put the same priority on everything, really. I typically try and get in 5-9 multisport events, a handful of running races, and then bike races if I have time.

My theory is kind of this: "Show up, and see what happens. Have fun, and enjoy the day."

X2, exactly what I would answer. Did six races, five tris this month, just another training day, a little harder, with more people, food, drink, and T-shirts provided, and sometimes some bling.

this is a pretty short year for me with only 9 multisport races and a few running/cycling ones.

lot of moving and job switching ate into race times this year.

i pick two bigger racesm normally in june and late aug/sept as my focus races, and dont taper for the others much at all. i still race them as hard as i can and expect to do well.

X3

I race very often. I've done 8 multisport races and probably a total of close to 30 races overall so far this year. I rarely train for a specific event. I just go out and do the best I can on a particular day. All the races are my form of speedwork as I do nothing for speed in my regular training. I'm fortunate to live in an area that has an abundance of inexpensive running events year round.

I don't like to get up early and I'm cheap so I only do 3 tris/year and some run races, sometimes the local winter du series.  I like to do my best at each race so I try to be well-rested for each event.

eta: the only running race where I podiumed I did a duathlon the day before so maybe I should do that more often rather than taper

This year so far, 3 tris, 2 centuries, a couple of 5ks, so far. Maybe another run or two? I'd like to do more, but family, work, band, and life get in the way, not that I'd trade any of that stuff.

I am in the show up and see what happens camp too.

There is a lot of stuff I want to do (weightlifting, gym classes, dance lessons, hike up a mountain, etc.) that I wouldn't have time to do if I only followed training plans for events. I have only so many free hours a day to do physical activity.

My schedule has to balance what my family, my body, and my budget will allow. I generally do one major event a month and can sometimes slip in an extra 5k, etc here and there. With so few races on my schedule I can generally consider all races as A races.

I've done 3 Sprints, 2 Olys, 1 Long Course and 3 Open water swims. I planned on one more Sprint and Oly. But, I've had a great season and may just end it early and look to setting goals for next year while having some fun on the bike during the remaining nice weather.

X4 - It's all about having fun. I love seeing friends at races and I love to train. I don't know if I would be able to just train without doing any races though. I guess I'm just a hair competitive.

Go Team Aquaphor!!!

7 triathlons, 1 century bike ride and I am scheduled to do a marathon on January 17th 2010.  I plan on doing at least this many triathlons next year, combined with more biking a running events.

Eight total for 2009.  And this is my first year!

Three 5Ks, three sprint triathlons, a 10K and a half marathon.

I just look at each event as a building block to the next.

Plan on longer more challenging Tri's for next year and a full marathon by next fall.

Wow, that's a lot of races overall.. Next year I want to do one sprint, one Oly and perhaps a half marathon, and a local 5 k (more for charity than anything...)  That will be a full season for me...

I did 1 Du, 1 sprint, 2 Olympics, and a HIM for multisport races. I planned these out every 4 weeks.

I will end up with prolly a dozen or more running races ranging from 5K's up to a Half Marathon.

This calendar year (from January on), I did mostly running events - an 8K, a 10-Miler, a half marathon, a 4 Miler, 2 sprint triathlons, 2 relays for triathlons (swim/run Oly, swim/run sprint) and I've got another swim/run Oly relay and a crazy running relay left for the year. Currently on the disabled list, so probably won't do much else for the year - maybe nothing til December.

I don't really do the "A" race thing, since I'm not doing long-distance triathlons, and once again, I'm out of doing the marathon I keep wanting to do (which would be an A race, for sure). I have races I care more about, so I focus on those. Others are just for fun.

I love straight running races. I get excited about them and I always have a good time, even if things didn't go according to plan. I just thing they're fun. They're cheaper than triathlons too, esp. the shorter distances (even the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler, a rather large and popular event is only $33). These things get expensive.

I started in February with my first 10K. I did an olympic in March as a practice race for St. Anthony's. St. Anthony's in April (sort of, no swim so I'm not sure I can count that as an olympic). In May I did a "Muddy Buddy" race. It is more of a fun time for most people. I ended up getting to the podium with my partner so it was fun for me.  Sprint in each May, June, July, August and another olympic at the end of August. It was on the same course as the olympic in March so I wanted to end the season with an A race to better my time from March. I finished 6 min. faster so mission accomplished. I plan on a couple half marathons and multiple 5 and 10K's before the end of the year. I am signed up for the Florida 70.3 in May so that will obviously be my focus for next year.

Totals:
1  10K
1  Muddy Buddy
4  Sprints
3  Olympics

Looking back, I feel pretty good about all I have accomplished in my first full year of training.

I've done both types of of run ups to a race, the planned training specificaly to peak for the race and just go train and get to the race in good shape...didn't notice a real difference in performance. on sept 20th I have a sprint then an oly on the 27th so the sprint will be used as another training session.

this year I am doing 10 multi sport events with an oly at the start and end but I planned on doing 3 others which didn't work out...plus one off road running event...
