If you received a medal for finishing bring it with you to your next check up along with the photo. Maybe he'll encourage the next patient that wants to do an IM.

Great job!!  You might try a little passive aggressive maneuver like saying, "You know, with hard work and determination, I think someday even you could be an ironman."

Congratulations!

No, I didn't but I might have to get a temporary tattoo for the next doctor’s visit! :-)

I just wanted to say thank you for all the kind words. For those of you who are considering doing an Ironman – I highly recommend it. I’m sure you’ve all heard the saying; swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, run 26.2 miles… brag for the rest of your life! All the hard work is worth the experience and the memories of running down that finish line chute.

You have every right to brag for the rest of your life.  A wonderful accomplishment especially given your background.

x-10 on giving the doc a picture.

Congratulations!  And I agree, the doc needs a pic for his wall.  YOU may be the inspiration another of his patients need to change their own life.

jldicarlo - 2009-08-31 2:15 PM Congrats!

Why don't you send the doc your finish line photo?  I bet he would LOVE to see the success story...I'm sure he gets tired of seeing unhealthy/unmotivated people all the time.

yes...do this!!  as a doctor myself, I LOVE IT when a patient of mine shares a success story like this with me.  Especially if we had previous discussions about whether or not it could be done due to health conditions.  Believe me, we docs do remember a lot of these conversations...and these types of successes are what keep me doing what I am doing.

And by the way...YOU ROCK!  Congrats on your IM finish!!!!

Loved your story.  My spine surgeon will get an IM finisher pic next year... bike crash got in the way this year.  I agree with everyone else regarding a pic with a short hand written note on it - perhaps even the quote about your heart taking it but not the rest of you, and then "thanks for the kick in the [oversized] pants"

Dude, you are an inspiration. Nice job.

Definitely send the finisher's pic to your doc - from your original post it looks like he did a good job motivating you toward better health.

Congratulations!! That is 3+ hours faster than both of my IM times and I'm still not ashamed of my times - so I hope you take lots of pride in yours, and just in finishing in itself!

I personally think the most telling part of the end result is if you didn't give up, because all of us who have done an IM know how hard it can be to keep going amidst the uncountable times when your frustration starts to scheme with giving up. So way to go - with what I consider an awesome time!!

What a great story.  I am going to send my doc my IM finisher photo when I do mine as he was less than supportive.  Thanks for posting, great job and awesome time.

what an awesome accomplishment for you!  really, inspirational.  the doc comment really grinds my gears though.  great for you that you are motivated by hearing what you can't do, but what if that wasn't the case?  what if someone goes in there and asks for an opinion from a 'trusted' professional and hears that?  they might actually listen to that crap.

i would send him a finishers pic and look for another doc.
