Yeah I heard about it when picking up my race packet for Columbia.  Word on the street is that a different company/group is putting on this race.  Supposedly Robert Vigiority (sp?) isn't doing this race (Race director who does Eagleman, Columbia Oly, Irongirl, Cheaspeake Man, etc.)

Kinda almost 50/50 if I wanna sign up since its a "first" year for them and all.  What does everyone else think?

it would be cool to get in on the inaugural race... plus I definitely like the time of year for a half-distance tri that is very local...

to me they made a mistake not making it 70.3 miles... dumb people like me will get hung up on that and be reluctant to do it.

I agree.. dropping that .3 affects them more than they know

Maybe so, but this is an event to raise money and awareness for a cause.

From the website:

"We chose the distance of 70 Miles versus the more well known 70.3 Mile distance for this race for one important reason.

70,000 is the estimated number of young adults diagnosed with cancer each year"

True, a few people might get stuck on the fact that it's not a 'real' half IM, but others in our area might appreciate a long course race so close to central MD. Personally, I like the races that don't try to fit into the 'cookie cutter' distances and instead try to provide a course that provides some uniqueness or character. I wish there were more races with a wider variety of course distances that take advantage of great rides/runs where the race is held.

Maybe I'm just biased because this race is 10 miles from my house!

Another thing that struck me about this is the number of triathlons in 2010 at Centennial Lake. We now have Columbia (May), a new sprint triathlon (June), and IronGirl (August) run by the CTA, and this race (October) run by the Ulman Fund. Wonder if the area neighbors will get race fatigue and start to complain?

Again, I'm not complaining. I can schedule a whole racing year around that great goose pond in Columbia and never go 15 mile from home.

I personally wouldn't do the race b/c I have race fatigue of the site. I agree, it seems like there are lots of places in MD a race could have been done, like Gunpowder falls or Sandy Point in the Spring....I"d rather race out of a different area. Its the reason I don't do Columbia much any more...

If 70,000 is the estimate, then 70,300 would have been a statistically insignificant deviation of that estimate

Probably more to do with creating their own identity. I would guess there might be issues with using "70.3" for something not put on by Ironman.

I believe this is the same group that does the Survivor 7 race by the Inner Harbor each year.

Supposedly those first 70 slots for $70 were gone in 5 mins.  Glad I was one of them.  **brushes shoulder like a cool kid**

Now I agree with Turtle.. this course is going to be engraved in my head now.  Columbia AND the Half full.  Sigh. Ahh well should be fun.

Last I checked the bike course was not posted, but they claim it will not just be a double loop of the columbia tri course. I'm curious how they'll get 56 in from Centennial Park.

The run is certainly different than just a double loop of the columbia tri course. It starts going across the dam, then up the hill toward Old Annapolis Rd and out toward Old Frederick, looping back to the lake trail, then climbing out of the park toward Old Annapolis AGAIN, then looping back to the finish.

The swim is basically the Columbia swim backwards. Boring. But what else can you do in that lake?

I'd love to see a sprint at Gunpowder - they tried to do one 4-5 years back but failed to get all the permits and ended up cancelling. Sandy point would be nice - lots of room for the swim and transition area. It could easily support a 1/2 IM distance race.

I think 56 will be easy to plan on the bike.. there are so many awesome roads out in western HoCO.. could even head to EC area and route 99. I personally think they did the .9 because of the lake. but they could have done a W on the end to add the .3.  I agree about the centennial overload (and I am about 5 miles from it) .. but we all know what happened with annapolis. The amount of OWS areas is severely limited in this area due to the fact that there are no natural lakes in central MD.. if only they opened up lock raven and prettyboy we would be good

Yeah, every time I drive over Liberty Res. or pass Loch Raven I salivate at the open water - i want to SWIM.

Piney Run Park is 3 miles from my house and has a lake large enough to do a long swim, good road access for a bike and run course, but like Loch Raven they won't allow swimming in it, even for a one time event. Too bad, it would be a nice venue.

Yeah, I think it's short simply because creating another 0.3 miles in the lake would have been challenging.  I'm considering the race, but haven't made any plans yet.

Hm, might keep this one on the radar as it is local and all that.

I was looking for a half-iron event since I won't be in town for Eagleman... Thanks for the link!
