Subject: week 5 of 8 week program = family vacation... how to salvage?
H folks,

So I'm at week 5 of my 8 week program to get ready for for the Lake Carroll (my first) tri and I had overlooked until last week that my wife had planned a  road trip vacation!

It has given me the opportunity today to take a 30 min swim in Lake Michigan, the first for me in open water in my wetsuit, but other than may be one or two more swim sessions, I'm not sure I'll get anything else in untill after labor day.

Should I crash back into week 6 when I get home? or should I reduce week 6 down a bit and trade off some swimtime for run/bike?

Week 8 is tapering anyway so I'm not sure what's best.

Any adivce would help.
Thanks.

On the days you can't swim, go run!

Vacation =

Take running shoes and run at every opportunity, easiest
Look for stationary bikes in fitness rooms or rent bike, tougher
Find places to swim, toughest, but not impossible   Check out http://www.swimmersguide.com/

Just jump back in on returning, don't overdo it trying to "make up" for missed workouts.

Alimony and/or Child Support are expensive, so focus on the vacation with the family

If you can get in a short swim or two, great.
If you can get in a short run or two, great.

In both cases, don't let the "need" for a workout leave the family frustrated because they have to wait for you to finish and shower.

Don't obsess over the "missed" workouts.  Your race-day performance will be determined largely by your long-term training.  If I were to guess, I'd say weather the day of the race will be a bigger factor than missing a week of training this close to the race (for a vacation, not injury).

This kind of thing happens to me all the time as I inevitably have a week on service inconveniently placed in the few weeks before a tri.  I would get in whatever workouts you can on the trip- absolutely an OWS or two (or three), and a couple of runs to see the sights if you can. Then I would jump right back into week 6 (I'm guessing week 7 is the max build before the taper week?).  You shouldn't lose enough fitness in one week of decreased workouts to need to build back up (or else taper weeks wouldn't work!).

Thanks for the advice.

I think I'll total 3 OWS and 3 - 4 runs for the 10 day trip,  maybe 30 miles on the bike too, but it's averaging about 6mph with my 4 yr old leading the pack , he's not going to break any records just yet.
