I was wondering if anyone has tried their hand at making their own gatoraid/cytosport or other drink stuff?  Also have any of you guys tried to make home made protien/energy bars?  Would you mind sharing your recipies please?

I know my dad makes his own drink.  He buys 100lbs of maltodextrin a season then sells off 75lbs and keeps 25 for himself.  I think he said it comes out to something stupid like $.17 per serving that way.  I'll see if I can get the recipe from him.  I tried it last weekend while I was out there and found it very drinkable.

Here's my dad's recipe.

5 ½ Cups Maltodextrin,  ½ Cup Sugar,  1 ½ Teaspoon Salt,  1 ½ Teaspoon Lite Salt,  1 package unsweetened Koolaid.  Adjust Salt and Lite Salt to individual needs.  Makes about 12 – 24 oz. bottles with 200 Calories.   25 Lbs. of Maltodextrin lasts me about a year.  100 Lbs of Maltodextrin costs about $115.00 from E.T. Horn Co. Product is Maltrin M-500.  A 21 quart pet food container holds about 12.5 Lbs. of the stuff.

If you want smaller amounts of maltodextrin or dextrose, www.allthewhey.com sells 5 lb bags for $8.50 and 10 lb bags for $17.  They also have unflavored and unsweeted whey protein if you want to add some of that.

I found this link the other day - It was posted by someone here on BT ( I tried to find the thread but cannot recall who posted it, or where I read it...) , and is a link to his or her coach's blog. About halfway down the page there is information on hydration/fuel for exercise and the amounts needed for a person based on bodyweight.
I found it to be an interesting read, and along with the info posted in this thread, one should be able to mix their own energy drink.

I do not have an energy drink recipe but here is a very cool protein bar recipe. This requires no cooking whatsoever (just the micro). Enjoy:

1 cup Natural peanut butter (or any healthy not butter)
8 tablespoons honey
1&1/4 cups whey protein powder
1 cup of uncooked oatmeal

Mix the pb and honey in a bowl, microwave on full for 80 secs. Add the rest and mix together (get your hands in man!!) can add raisins/nuts etc to taste. Smooth into 13x9 tray and leave for 20 mins. Cut into 10 to 12 equal bars and wrap and store in fridge!!

:- protein 20g, carbs 30g and fat 20g of which only 3g are saturated. Those figures are per bar, don't forget your 128g fat divides into 10 to 12 bars and most of the fat in pb is healthy fat which the body uses similar to carbs.

Which if you're not a scientist is sodium chloride and potassium chloride.  One of the electrolytes you need to replace via these drinks is potassium so you get it from the lite salt.

If it is good enough for Aqua Girl,  it is good enough for me
I will assume that it will work just as well out here on the 'wet coast' of BC as it does in the 'Land of Ice and Snow' !!

Thanks, Aqua Girl, for providing the source.... I always want to be able to assign credit where it is due!

Can anyone  explain what, if any,  difference there is between dextrose and maltodextrin?

LOL
Yeah I guess it will work just as well out on the "wet" coast!!

From what I understand maltodextrin is more easily digested than dextrose, which is why a sports drink made with this is ideal. It is also much less sweet than dextrose. This makes it easy to tolerate after 3 or 4 hours of drinking it!!

I use a mix which ends up giving me about 285 calories an hour. I mix up one hour bottles and add a couple of scoops of Endurolytes and a tiny bit of unflavoured orange Koolaid to add flavour. I top it off with a tablespoon of sugar so there is just a hint of sweetness to it. It took a bit of experimentation to find out which kind of flavour and how much sweetness to add before i found the combo that was right for me.

Dextrose is better known as Glucose which is a simple sugar easily burned by the body. Maltodextrin is a polymer, or chain, of dextrose. So dextrose is a simple sugar, maltodextrin is a complex carbohydrate. Maltodextrin is burned more slowly and thus very useful during hr.+ exercise. Dextrose is also useful during long workouts because it give a quick boost.

For drink 24oz enduance drink:
I usually add 3oz of maltodextrin http://www.thegrape.net/browse.cfm/4,12181.html to Gatoade or other sports drink mix. I buy the gatorade lemon-lime mix because it contains the salt proportions I need and I actually like the taste. Most sports drinks from the gocery use sucrose (which contains fructose) and/or fructose. So ideally you should eliminate fructose during workouts as the body doesn't burn them efficiently. The reason I don't is then I have to figure out the correct salt proportions.
Does anyone have a good formula for salt proportions per 24 ounces?

For 2-3 Gu/Gel: which I add to large syringe with end cut for easier dispersal
4oz maltodextrin to bowl
Add 1-2oz of boiling water to bowl and wisk until maltodextrin is dissolved
Add gatorade powder to taste.

Refigerate until use.

By heating the maltodextrin and then cooling it dissolves nicely and then cools into a gel. Thickness is determined by the amount of water. You could substitute the water for other sports drinks, boil, add to the maltodextrin, and then have your gels to taste.

This is tons cheaper!

Additionally, maltodextrin is a modified corn starch. Unlike cornstarch however, it has a high gycemic index, therefore for readily available for fuel.

As like cornstarch, maltodextrin makes a great thickener. So can easily be made into gu's/gels (see my post below.) Homebrewers use maltodextrin to add body to the head of beer.

For an 8oz bag of maltodextrin for $1.59 I go to http://www.thegrape.net/browse.cfm/4,12181

Hi jdarkow

I do not know if this will help or not, but looking at the info on the Lava Salts website (the salts mentioned in the article to which I previously provided the link)  there is a chart of the amounts of salts per serving, as well as the suggested number of servings per hour and the amount of water to drink with the salts....  http://www.squeezy.com/salts.htm

I hope this helps a bit

Great article! I love the bare bones aproach of just:
water
maltodextrin, and
salts
No frills...

I assume instead of purchasing lava salts, I could just add the 255mg of NaCl (table salt), and KCl Lite Salt (amount listed on Lava Salts nutrition facts) to the appropriate amount of water and maltodextrin per serving?

I wouldn't but would go with the known. Lava Salts have more in it than just NaCl

It was what I used for all my IM training and on race day on both bike and run. I add flavoring of Strawberry Lemonade pretty week.

Well, keep in mind that I, too, am a rooooookie !!

I love the info in that article, written by KathyG's coach, IIRC, but I will also just add the regular and lite salts suggested by COskigirl, as you are thinking of doing  (but don't tell Kathy Wink)  . I am also going to use a small amount of iced-tea mix, ... yeah I know......  I do love iced-tea though, and I will need some kind of flavour for this energy drink, and it also has one or two of the ingredients listed in  the Lava Salts.
