Subject: Breakfast Before an IM

All of the books I read suggest taking in a lot of calories the morning of your IM.  I have read everything from eating power bars to what sounds like a breakfast buffet!  My standard breakfast before races or long runs or rides has always been one packet of Instant Quaker Maple Oatmeal and a banana if I feel like it.  I am very disciplined about the nutrition I take in on the bike (Infinit) and on the run (Hammer and Endurolytes) and I usually take a Hammer gel right before the swim as well.

I definitely don’t want to do anything new on race day and I haven’t needed more than the above breakfast for any of my races (including 2 HIMs) or long workouts yet, but let’s face it, Ironman is going to be a lot longer!  Should I just get up a bit earlier and eat more oatmeal (multiple servings)?  I think I could handle more oatmeal but I am not sure what else I would feel comfortable with.  I want to test my race day breakfast in the upcoming weeks and especially at my Full Aquabike on September 19, so I appreciate any suggestions!

Also, what did you eat?

3 pancakes with maple syrup, and 2 eggs.  At IHOP.  3 hours before the race.  Then a gel about half-an-hour before the swim start.  Worked well for me.

First:  Breakfast is not what's going to get you through the race, nutritionally speaking.  I also read advice about eating huge amounts of food, and thought 'really?'.  Do I really want all that in my 'system' at the beginning of the race?

I ate a bagel with peanut butter and jelly and a cup of coffee about 2 1/2 hours before I jumped into the water for the race.  I also ate a gel about 15 minutes before, and sipped on a relatively weak sports drink over the course of the morning.  All told this was around 600 calories.

I had no serious nutritional issues all day, not because of breakfast, but because I ate well on the bike.

Of course, that was just me.  Go with what has worked for you in the past.  Don't eat a load of food just because someone wrote that in a book.

I would suggest you start eating more before your long bikes and runs for breakfast and see how that works for you while training next couple of months and copy it for IM morning. Sounds like you should increase your calorie intake by a few hundred calories.

I eat white rice with egg whites and brown sugar. But have back ups of whole grain toast with PB and banana. Good thing as race morning I woke up and was going to eat my breakfast but all the rice was used up the night before so I went with plan B.

Yes, I am very good about taking in nutrition on the bike and on the run, so I thought sticking with my routine would be ok, if not slighly increasing my oatmeal serving size.

I had a couple of Nutrigrain bars 2 1/2 hours before my swim start.  And some Diet Coke for the caffeine.  Everything else was on the course.

Well, I would say you need more than you had for the HIMs.  Its nice to go into the race with a full store of glyogen in the body.  After your dinner on saturday, you will lose those stores overnight.  The idea is to replace them.  The plan that I like is to have a light/normal dinner.  Then if you get up to go to the bathroom during the night, eat something (banana, or sip some infinit).  Then 3 hours before, have your normal breakfast, like for your HIM, but add something else full of carbs (banana, bagel, powerbar).  Then 2.5 hours to the race sip on carbs, and have a gel 30 minutes beforehand.   Everyone is different, so you will have to find the way to top of the carb stores and not be full or bloated.  I sip on my infinit run mix which gets me 59 carbs, no protien and 24 oz of water all in one before the race.

No need to have a HUGE breakfast, but those extra calories will help later in the day.

I do oatmeal too (it, um, clears things out), but I use the old fashioned oats, some honey and peanut butter --- which adds up to 400-500 calories.

and is delicious !

PennState - 2009-09-01 3:42 PM Be careful about taking in too much fiber the am of surgery... it will add to the bloated sensation you do not want.

I've had surgery.  IM was similar, but they don't put you to sleep first.

Bacon, eggs, + pancakes about 2 1/2 hours before the race starts.  No problems...

For shorter races, including HIM, totally different.

My experience is similar to Experior's above.

I did an OLY, HIM and an IM this year, and ate about the same before each: a fairly light breakfast (cookie+fruit+chocolate) with some tea or coffee.  Then a gel just before the start.

And I made sure to eat a big lunch and an early dinner the day before.

I definitely would not want a big breakfast on race day, especially for a long event.

No IM experience here but Jordan, winner of IMC posted this, keep in mind he is 6'3 70kgs I believe

I actually took in too many calories. Or rather, I think, too much caffeine, as I had a bit of stomach distress. Not cramps, but let's just my race suit REALLY needed to be washed.

Anyway, I had my normal big breakfast - 1200cals, which was probably a bit too much. Probably didn't need my second 1/2 bowl of cereal.

Then I had one scoop of EFS with one scoop of PreRace ~20min before the start

On the bike, I premix my carry-with-me bottles with salt. My bottles are ~200 cals with a LOT of salt. I add 3x SaltStick capsules to each bottle. I had a 24oz. bottle between the bars, and an Arundel Crono with the same mixture on the frame. And I had another bottle in special needs. Each one has 1 scoop (96cals) of EFS + 2 (small) scoops of ClifShot Crisp Apple + 3x SaltStick. I had all three of those. I also had 4 x Gu Roctane (too much caffeine when I added it all up from the Roctane and ClifShot). And one gel flask with ~400 cals of EFS liquid shot + 3x SaltStick in it. I needed extra salt because it was regular gatorade, not gatorade endurance, on the course. I also had 4 x gatorade bottles = total of 2000 calories, which is a bit on the high side. 1800 is closer to correct + 1000 at breakfast and less caffeine. I also had 6 additional salt stick capsules over the course of the ride.

On the run, I had a gel flask, but my stomach didn't want it, so I just canned it. I had one or two gatorades and a pepsi at every aid station.

I'd have to chekc my race report to remember exactly what I had for breakfast but I know it was around 600-700 calories which is bigger than usual.  I know I had three packets of instant oatmeal and a cereal bar but I'm not sure what else.  I had no problems with bloating or cramping.

I eat the same thing before every long workout and every race of any distance. Never leaves my body guessing.

1 cup cooked rice and 2 eggs scrambled together, 1 banana and a piece of dry toast. 550 calories, ALWAYS 3 hours before race start.

Edited for a Freudian typo. I said cooked "race" not cooked "rice".
