Subject: IM Training
Hi,

I am 6 weeks out from my IM race.  My question is, all of my long workouts are just that "really long" the issue I am having is that my training plan calls for 6 workout days a week, but when I have a long workout (such as a 100 mile bike or a 16-18 mile run) I find that if I have a day off before these long workouts the quality of the workout is MUCH better than if I do what the plan says which might be run 8 miles or bike 20-30 miles the day before my scheduled long workout.  Earlier in the training plan when my "longs" weren't that long I had no problem doing 6 days a week.  Is it better to "stick with the plan" or modify it to improve my long workouts?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

P.S.  I don't feel that I am undertrained.  My 18 mile runs are at 8 min/mi. pace and my 100 mi. bikes avg. 20 mph.

Part of the structure of the plan is likely that you are doing these longer workouts with some fatigue and not feeling fresh as a daisy.  That said, I have seen schools of thought that as long as you are hitting your long in each sport for the week, the rest is nice but its all not necessary.  Personally, I have seen benefits of volume with run training vs less workouts at a faster pace, but thats just me.

I'm no expert but my suggestion is to follow/trust the plan. Keep in mind that you'll have some taper time to get your legs fresh for the race. I think that's the hardest thing to get our heads around sometimes.

Looking at your logs tells me as much as my log does, NADA. 6 weeks out means you are in the bulk training period. There are theories behind both day off before or after the large weekend. I personally don't have a day off but Monday and Friday are swim days only. Then Tuesday - Thursday are jam packed with 2 swims, 2 bikes (1 brick), 2 runs. I have done all 3 theories and I like this one the best. That Friday AM swim gives me 24 hours rest before the long ride and Mondays’ PM long swim= gives me 36 hours rest from the weekend.

Good Luck, what race are you doing?

Joe hit the part of "not feeling as fresh as a daisy".  The plan you are using is serving a particular purpose.  Follow the plan, unless of course you are sick or incompacitated for a reason, then don't make up a particular part that you missed, or readjust accordingly.  But, if you miss a long training day, it's better to get that long training day for your endurance, at least I think it's worth it.
