mchally - 2009-09-08 3:14 PM I am curious...

How often do trains come through and how fast are they going?

I've tried unsuccessfully to find a rough schedule for the crossings, but the consensus seems to be that the trains go through at up to 30MPH.

it is too bad that there isn't better visibility as you approach the tracks at some of the crossings.

skavoovie - 2009-09-08 1:59 PM Keep your ears open. The crossings don't have a "train approaching" signal.

Looks like at least one might by race day - i got this from a different forum.  I think the crossing being referred to is on Hwy B between miles 33 and 34:

On my way to get my laundry done in Walworth, WI...a contractor (RSC was the name on one of the truck doors) was out replacing the crossing signals on County Hwy B...Eastbound signal has been replaced and has provision for gate and possibly LED lighting (must be a problem area for drivers blowing the signals) Westbound does not appear to have been changed yet...

That's true. I rode by some people workin' on those tracks on Sunday.

As for hitting the angled tracks at 90-degrees, there's enough shoulder room to swing to the right, then come back left, so it's not very difficult to do it without falling or getting hit by a car.

Don't forget that when you approach the turn onto Route 120, there are rumble strips in the road and those suck much more than train tracks.

skavoovie - 2009-09-08 1:59 PM They have stop signs, but we won't be observing those.

OH, MAN - speak for yourself, here!  I always observe stop signs, even during a race - my tradition is having pancakes AFTER the race, not being turned into one DURING.

SERIOUSLY?? You stop at stop signs DURING  a race??? I guess if the intersection doesn't have a volunteer (highly possible) then you would slow down, look and listen, but Ive never seen anyone STOP during a race. (In 12 yrs.) I understand why you would though. A train coming, different story completely.

d-nort - 2009-09-08 1:45 PM Wow! I never thought about having an actual train cross the tracks. That would suck! Imagine losing 5 minutes because of a train!

happened at Duathlon Nationals in Va this year...during the mens 35-39 group!! Can you imagine??

As far as i'm aware, the law isn't suspended because of a race.  Face it - we're not pros on a closed course.  My life and my wife's peace of mind are more than worth the few seconds "lost" by stopping.  I was broadsided by an SUV last year while riding my bike (driver on cell phone ran a stop sign), and don't care to relive the experience.  My bike was totalled in that instance; fortunately, i was not.
