Subject: Anyone done a Tri with a pool swim?

Hey everyone,

I have a sprint tri coming up this weekend with a pool swim.  I have never done this before and it's supposed to be cool outside (guesstimate 46F/ 8C).  I don't want to wear my tri clothes in the pool, and it's too cold for them anyway.  Any suggestions as how not to freeze my buns off nor have a T1 time of 5 minutes putting on warm woolies over a wet swimmer?

Thanks

Jen

I've asked this question as well and was just going to resort the 5 minute T1, but luckily it was warm this year.

I did one back in April. It wasn't nearly that cold, but it was cool. Remember, everyone will be in the same situation as you, so taking some extra time might not be too big of a deal.

I just went through this on Sunday. Luckily the weather was warm enough not to wear a wet suit if you didn't want to. I saw that most of the top people weren't wearing a wet suit so I didn't. But on second thought, I should of wore one. I think the time you improve on the swim will offset the wetsuit removal if you practice getting the wetsuit off. If the water is 46 degrees, I don't think you will have a choice. The water on Sunday was 69 and it felt cold to me. Good luck in your race.

I did this in April. Nice, warm 85 degree pool then out into 50 degree weather. I wore my tri suit during the swim, then pulled on a long sleeve cycling jersey and winter cycling gloves in T1. Took all that stuff off in T2 and ran in my tri suit. I warmed up nicely on the bike. Good luck. Hope it's sunny.

Jen, I did the Early Bird last year in much the same weather.  I, and the rest of the competitors, left the transition area simply wearing trunks and goggles.  After the swim, we all just run (slowly) back to the transition area, don our jerseys, shells, socks, shoes, cycling gloves, helmets and jump on the bikes.  I too thought that it would be too cold getting out of the pool but after the swim and with the adrenaline flowing, you just don't notice it.  I am deliberating with the idea of using my skinsuit this year but fear that it may not dry off fast enough and be too cool on the bike.

I did one also this weekend and decided not to wear one. Sprint Tri are so quick that you are in and out. If is was any distance longer, I would say wear one.

Good luck

Last year did a sprint tri in pool Out side was northly wind and about 2 degrees celsius. I Swam in very light weight "quick dry" shorts and just put on a long sleeve running shirt. I was cold on certain parts of the bike but keep the heart rate up and should be fine . Newfoudland 1st week June = Cold.

I did one just this weekend. The morning was unusually cool for May (47F) but it warmed up to 65F by midday.  I wore my trisuit and put a windbreaker on over it for the bike. My legs were cold for the first couple of miles, but ok after that. I ran without the windbreaker.
