Deer crossing road runs into bicyclist

in

POLAND -  A Maine bicyclist is recovering from surgery to repair his broken leg after a deer darted across a highway and knocked him off the road.

Four members of the Maine Cycling Club were riding wheel-to-wheel at about 28 mph when the doe charged across the road Wednesday evening after the group crested a hill in the town of Poland.

Richard Marchessault, one of the riders, says the doe narrowly missed his back tire before smacking into Dave Story. Story ended up in a gully with his leg broken in two places; as for the doe, it disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.

Marchessault and Allan Lobozzo, another of the riders, tell the Sun Journal that Story will have a great tale to tell. But Lobozzo says, "He's not smiling now."

Same thing (well the deer part, not the broken leg part) happened to the guy I bought my bike from...On what is now my bike! That would really suck. Not alot you can do in paceline that wouldn't cause an accident one way or another, either.

That doe is going to have some serious problems once he gets caught.  I see a lawsuit coming his way for sure.

It reminds me of the triathlete that rode into a bear here in Colorado during a race a few years back http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/25/national/main1833579.shtm...

If that doe is a "he", he's got more problems than just a lawsuit...

i see lots of deer in rides and runs and i always get nervous that they are going to do that...usually they just run alongside of me a while and then dart off into the woods.

Well, you know, 99.9% of the deer out there are considerate to cyclists.  It's just that small percentage who don't seem to care.

Seriously, though, I hope he heals up quickly.

Heh - on my 35 mile ride last night a deer and a doe were standing across the road just staring at me - I was going uphill at 11mph though - so no real danger

I'd tell that deer to wear a helmet.

My husband's coworker had a squirrel run into her wheel... didn't end well for either of them but at least she wasn't, um, cut in half.

god I so hate squirrels when riding, could there be a dumber animal?

I had two bucks run in front of me during a tri a couple of years ago, from the race report:
"At the 12 mile point a 4 point Whitetail buck jumped out of the woods 30 or so yards in front of me and I yelled "wow! " Then seconds later a 8 point buck jumped out that was freaking huge and pranced across the roa d not more that 20 yards in front of me and I let out a loud "holy !" The person in front of me looked back at it and the person behind me who I later talked to coundl't beleive the size of the 8 pointer."

That 8 pointer was BIG!

Almost happened to me a few years back.  Deer just darted right out in front of me.  I think the difference in me hitting it or not was seconds.  No collision, but my heart rate went dangerously high.

As for the rodent population.  Around here it's the little chipmunks that seem to have a death wish. Every ride there's several that decide to cross the path just as I'm approaching.  Haven't hit one yet.   (probably just jinxed myself and tomorrow's ride will include chipmunk tragedy. )

We've got a chipmunk problem too, in addition to the squirrels (and other cyclists - hmpf).  I had one that MUST have jumped through the spokes of my wheel. He headed right at it, I heard something happened, and he scampered out the other side.  Someone riding with me swears he went through, and not around.

I'd have a heart attack if a deer ran anywhere near me!  I know folks who have had collisions with them on motorcycles and spend months in a wheelchair.
