Is there anything wrong with buying a 2nd hand bike off the likes of ebay if you know your size of frame?

I don't see what can go wrong apart from saving a lot of money? I've had new and 2nd hand road bikes in the past and apart from the new one not playing up as much and it being a bit nicer to run I didn't notice a huge difference, just a $1000 saving.

This applies to road and tri bikes.

No problem buying from ebay and other online sites.  Pay attention to the usual: good feedback rating, no hidden charges, complete descriptions, clear pictures of the actual item, not one "ripped" from the mfr. website, etc.  If you see something in question in a photo or if they describe a flaw, ask for a picture of it.  My current bike, with the exception of the saddle and handlebar tape was entirely built up with parts I got from online companies and ebay.  It was fun and I actually saved money and built exactly what I wanted.

x2.  I got my bike from ebay, and love it.  Shop carefully.

I just want to mirror the thoughts of the other posters;  nothing wrong with it, just shop carefully.

I'd just like to add that you can often find better deals on craigslist or on the classifieds here, than on ebay.

Hmm this is interesting. I was wondering if people bought bikes online. Has anyone bought from a store online brand new?

The only bikes I own are second-hand.

Got a Bianchi road bike with Campy gears for $300 from someone on my Master's team in 2000.

This year I got a tri bike (Felt) off ebay. Carbon everything, plus a set of Zipp wheels, for $2500. I cleaned it this weekend and did notice some nicks that makes it look like it took a tumble, but I've had some adjustments done at the bike shop and I've ridden some fast miles on it, and nothing's wrong with it.  I could have spent the same money and gotten a middle-of-the-road carbon tri- bike with no race wheels. I prefer used.

I bought my bike on Craigslist and thus far am very satisfied. It only had about 40 miles on it.

As others have said, shop with caution and common sense, as you would for any sizeable purchase.

my bike came from ebay. contact the seller before bidding. if they are honest they wont mind answering ? Make sure you know exactly what you want. Hard to test drive a bike a 1000 miles away.

When I bought my frame from a guy in CA, I asked for his phone number, called him and talked to him about the frame.  You end up meeting the nicest people sometime!  Plus you will get a good "feel" for the person by talking to them live.

I got my bike off ebay from a not so LBS.  It was their demo model, and was about $700 less than my LBS.  I was way excited, and it wasn't that big of a cost for me, so I wasn't as careful as I should have been, but it worked out great!  My next bike will be a lot more expensive ( if my wife says it OK ), and I will be more careful.  My LBS was going through some bad stuff, and their employs were putting me in something that I knew didn't fit.

Yea, I've bought several with decent although not perfect results.

First was an old road bike (for about $100 plus shipping).  It was a good bike for my first full year of tri's and my HIM.  The size was off (it was advertised as a 55 cm, but was really a 56-57 from a manufacturer who routinely makes big frames).

Second was my Klein tri-bike (more than the above, but still not outrageous).  It's been "in the family" now for almost 3 years and is the bike I rode at CdA this summer.  I'm very happy with it, and even found a set of wheels for it via E-bay.

The way I looked at it, I was willing to throw away the purchase if it wasn't what I wanted, so it had to pretty much be a deal for me to bite.  I suppose I could have taken components and swapped them from one frame to another instead of "throwing away" the purchase.

It seems the late-model bikes entry-level bikes aren't discounted much, so depending on what you want, it may be almost as expensive as buying new.  Some of the more expensive bikes are significantly cheaper second-hand.

No, not if you know your size, and are all caveat emptor and schtuff. (an can handle basic maintenance, know if you're getting a good deal, and recognize there may be additional costs associated with it)

Some of my bikes were bought new, others not.

Nothing wrong with it.  My dad, sister and brother in law went that route.  My dad called the guy from ebay and had a good chat with him about the bike, why the guy was selling it, etc.  I bought mine from the LBS because they were having an awesome sale and b/c I am a big girl and wanted the Lifetime garantee on the carbon fiber frame.  It doesn't have a lifetime if you are 2nd hand....otherwise, I would have bought online.

Know exactly what you want and what size you want, spend several weeks/months looking at the online market so you recognize a good deal when you see it. I prefer Craigslist because of the local nature of it, it is more likely you can inspect the bike in person prior to buying it. Beware of scams, they abound on CL especially ( I saw an Orbea with ZIPP 808's for $1200 - contacted the seller out of curiosity and sure enough it was a scam - too good to be true = fraud).

Also, contact your LBS and see what they charge for a fitting for a bike you did not purchase from them. There's a good chance you'll buy the right size frame, get the right bike, but need to make fitting adjustments (add/remove spacers, handlebar/seat adjustments, etc). This could add an additional $1-200 to the cost of the used bike, and possibly make it not such a great bargain. Tune-ups and new parts (tubes/tires, etc) might add additional cost to the purchase of a used bike.

A new bike from a LBS might include a fitting and tune-ups, and a warranty. A used bike look like a great deal, but if you have to pay for these things and you don't get a warranty you might not be getting as good a deal as you think.

Just be careful, as usual. I got a GREAT road bike with one ebay transaction, and got taken on the  next.  I tried to return the bike and it got lost on the way back...long story short, even with insurance, I'm still out the money.  So I"m a bit scared of it now, I'd prefer craigslist and seeing it in person.

I have. Actually a bunch of BTers bought the same bike a few years ago (Cervelo One) from Inside Out Sports online. They were brand new complete bikes, just a few model years old. I knew the size I needed, but had never ridden a tri bike of any sort before. It worked out well for me.

My boyfriend bought his P2C off of eBay last winter. About a day of panicking when he immediately paid for it the minute the auction ended and didn't hear from the seller for a few days - after repeated emails and eBay nudges. Guess he went out of town or something (who goes out of town when their $2K bike auction ends?!). But it ended up working out just fine.

The only problem I have with buying a bike off ebay is not being able to see it in person before buying it. I'd want to ride it at least once and check it for frame damage or stability issues. That being said, if you've gone to a local bike shop and test-rode the exact same model, then it may be worth the risk to save hundreds of (or a thousand) bucks.

There's nothing wrong with buying used, although I may be a little biased. I bought an older used road bike in 2008, and I've now put over 750 miles on it. In my last tri (The 2009 Austin Tri, Olympic distance) I averaged 20.6 mph. I'm thrilled with my bike. It fits right, it loves the downhills (max speed was 38.4mph) and it has never let me down in a race. The fact that I bought it for $200 also makes it really hard to justify buying a new one.

As with anything else, be aware of the risks when buying used.

Cool
