Subject: AZ IronMan 2006...possible?
I am considering the IronMan that will be hosted in AZ for 2006. I am going to do one sprint in August and another olympic distance in September followed by the Marine Corps marathon. I just started doing to 20 Week 1/2 Iron Man training prgram to get me ready for the Olympic Tri in Septemeber.

My question is in "general" how long should one train for an Ironman? With my 2 tris and a marathon near the end of the year is it wise to train for the Iron man as well in April of 06? I feel like if I put my mind to it I can do it but I would like some experienced triathletes chimming in to give me some ideas and thoughts. Just trying to get a gauge of where I should be at.

Thanks all

IMHO,
I think you need 6 months of serious IM training before you can do one. Any less and you will be cheating yourself, any more and you will burn out. I would also suggest getting a coach, or at least a really good training program

I did IMAZ in my second year of triathlons.  However, I was sort of an athlete when I started.  It depends on your fitness level right now.

Put it this way.  As Tom said, you need 6 months.  If, 6 months prior to IMAZ - this October - you feel like a week with about 12 hours of training, consisting of a 2-hour bike ride, a 90-minute run and a swim of 1500-2000 meters without stopping is no big deal, then you'll be ready to start IM training.  If you think, "I could do that, but it'd be a bear", you're not ready.  Only if it's, "yeah, that's doable, bring it on!"

You explanation interests me. I am at a point where the regimen you describe doesn't phase me in terms of the long rides/runs/swims. (I can't always get 12 hrs in because of work and family though, so I tend to maintain during the week and increase on the weekends.)

So far I have done sprints, and am doing an oly next month plus a half IM in September. (This is what I am gearing my training toward this season.) I am seriously considering an IM next September, and am wondering what advice you have for preparing over the course of a year.

Thanks
