All the 'upgrade' questions got me wondering...

What particular item (and why) do you have that gets you the most bang for your buck?  I'm not talking speed or anything.  I'm not talking the needed items like bike, shoes, clothes - but the nice extras.  Maybe an example or two can help clarify my question...

Some of my top items:

Race belt.  For 5 measley bucks, this item is just the definition of 'convenience' on race day, IMO.

Bungee/speed laces.  Again, for 6-7 bucks, they are convenient and fast.  I have them in all my running shoes.  Both training and racing.

Garmin 305.  Not exactly 'cheap', but for the amount I use it, and for what it give me in training and racing.  Is a lot of 'bang'

Transition bag...I've got the TYR bag and I love it (a lot more than the duffel bag I was using before that)...cost me like $55.  That's a lot cheaper than a Garmin 305.

I'm cheap, I don't even buck up for Bodyglide... I just use PAM, I always find it amusing when I am standing there considering if the Garlic flavor would be better than the others ;-)

I hope you are not doing any races here on the West Coast!
We have Great White Sharks here. ;-)

On the other hand, you probably don't have to worry about Vampires.

I have two mesh backpacks from-Walmart.

$3.50 each!

Great for swimming gear when not racing.

Also, I have bodypart specific blue gel holders.

I put the blue gel in the freezer and when I am done training, I can put them  on my back and knee without fuss or being stuck on the couch until I am done icing.

Practicing transitions goes a looooooooooog way on raceday. Missed a podium 2 weeks ago due to a bad T1.  Just sayin.

I signed up for a swimming class at my local Junior College, mostly just to get access to the pool...  $55 for 4 months of swimming classes (2x/week)  compared to $100/month at the local Y.  As an added bonus, there's an actual instructor there on the pool deck helping me with my technique.

I would have to say my camelbak.  resisted buying one for years but I finally bought one.  it is great when training long periods.  I fill it with water plus 2-bottles of cytomax on the bike and can can ride anywhere from 75 - 100 miles (depending on the ride and temp) without stoping to refill water.  it has been great this summer training for an IM.

Adamo racing saddle, hands down. Even at twice or three times the price it would still have been worth the money to gey rid of the crotch numbness. Literally went from having to stop every 10-15km, to being able to ride over 100km without stopping for anything other than to water a tree.

Agree with many things said:

Laces are a great investment, now that I have Zoots they come with laces like that.
Race belt makes things much easier (just dont forget to put it on like I did last race)
GU, Hammer Gel, or your favorite nutrition has always proved beneficial for me.
Gym membership with a pool is also very high on the list!

My iPod nano. That little buddy has been through a lot with me.
Oh and it was a cheap refurbished one I got off of Ebay. Never let me down.

One zip lock bag... $0.05.  I cram my hat, glasses, race belt, and gu in it, and in T2 I grab it a go.  Saves me more time than my bungee ties.  I also put a note on the bag reminding me to take my helmet off.   ?? Maybe thats the bigest bang for the buck?  It doesn't cost anything, and keeps me from running all the way back through transition.

Why do you even need the baggie? All that will fit in the hat, then you grab it and go. No fumbling with a baggie or having to carry it throughout the run.

That's a good idea. Will not work for me though I wear a visor.
