Subject: 1/2 marathon yesterday...
Had a goal of running a 1:45 or less. Did a 1:44 a few weeks back on my own, so I felt pretty confident.

Had a good morning (race started at 4:30pm), good lunch and a PowerBar right before start (had to have something... and I like the Coconut...). Had great first 5 miles and was well ahead of schedule when I all of a sudden started to feel sick... a mile later I threw up everything I had. Still managed to keep going and pace dropped from 7:30 miles to about 9min/mile. Was it ever a suffer fest the last few miles! Did finish in 1:49.08. First I was a bit disappointed, then I start to think... if I can run that on a bad day, getting below 1:45 shouldn't be that hard if I have a decent day and very close to 1:40 on a good day...

Best of all, no blisters at all! Lots of Assos on the feet before socks and shoes went on and feet felt great the entire run. Legs are surprisingly good day as well.

Glad you are being positive when all didn't go as well as you liked.
It's all a learning experience!

Sounds rough, but you toughed it out.  A very respectable time.

Good JobCool

What did you have for lunch?  It would be good to learn from if it were a specific food issue.  I can not run after pizza or any tomato based sause, just causes my stomach to feel really bad even 3 hours later.

Sorry... didn't complete my post before submitting it...

Lunch was a chicken wrap with avocado, lettuce and tomato, and I know I'm fine with that...

The Powerbar wasn't the culprit either... I think it was my Cytomax sports drink... I've been using the same brand (and flavor) for a few years and I have never reacted to it, but yesterday I had three bottles in my fuelbelt (knew 4 would be too many and 2 might be ever so slightly short, so 3 it was). Usually I do one bottle of sports drink and the rest of the bottles water. For some reason (and I still have no clue why..), I filled all three bottles with Cytomax. To make things worse, I usually use 1 scoop instead of the 2 scoops per 16oz. So here I was running along drinking a sports drink that was stronger than I'm used to and not having any water at all (yes, they had 6 water stops along the route, but stupid me didn't need it, I had my fuelbelt!). My usual drinking pattern is a couple of mouthfuls each mile and rotate from bottle to bottle; this way I should've had sports drink every 3rd time I drank.

I'm pretty certain, the sports drink pushed me over. Lesson learnt, dilute the sports drink and follow the normal drinking pattern.

Still, despite missing my goal time of sub-1:45, I kept pushing even after the disaster. Lesson#2, even if you have to slow down because you're having a bad day, you will loose less time than you think. Save what you can of your race and most importantly FINISH.
