OK, the thought crossed my mind while I was out for a run tonight. Does the order of exercise matter when you break your workouts into 2 separate sessions on a daily basis? For instance, I finished running, and I'll go for a swim later tonight after the Bears game. But it made me wonder if I should have finished the swim first, then gone for a run later tonight (since that's the order of a tri). Or, is it beneficial to run and tire myself for the swim? Is there any logic to this at all, or is it just a situation of doing whatever suits you the best so you get the workouts in?

If you were going to 'brick' the two then swim first is always the way in the program I'm following, big break inbetween the two, you will have done a lot of recovery so why not just fit in what you can when you can?

But I'm a newbie, what do I know!

In my (brief) experience, it makes little difference, and logistics almost always trumps other considerations at this level of planning.

There are some exceptions.  For example, if I have a day with a really hard interval session on the run and a relatively easy swim session, then I'd prefer to do the run first, because the swim (in that case) can serve as a nice recovery from the run.  (No, I'm not saying that all swim sessions do this -- the really hard ones sap the energy out of you just as hard runs do.)

If you're breaking it into two seperate workouts, then no, it won't matter.

If you keep them together (i.e. a brick), then yes, it does matter... this is when you teach your body to from the bike to the run for example (and teaching your brain more than anything!)

Bricks do in the same order as tri

Other workouts depends....runs I need to be most careful about...I often do swim/runs back to back as it is time efficient.  Swimming after long runs later in the day helps recovery if you don't cramp up. Swims are hardest to fit in as there is limited time due to pool hours.

It is not what order you do as far as event.  It is at what level of intensity.  You can do all three sports on the same day if you want, as long as you do not do each workout at the same level of intensity (unless all three are at easy/recovery effort).
