Subject: 'Splain this to me: bike shorts and saddles
This makes me laugh every time I think about it. Why have we gone to riding on thin, hard saddles, but wearing a big fat pad on our butt? Huh?

The padding the shorts is more to prevent chafing than anything else. If you ever tried to ride a bike without shorts, you'll understand.

You do realize I hope that a thicker more cushy saddle will actually hurt you more in the long run than a think hard saddle? Thick padding will actually provide less support, which means that your body will have to support itself, hence the pain. Less padding on the other hand allows your body to be supported by the structure of the saddle (not the soft padding).

Because big fat saddles give you saddle sores like you can't imagine.  YMCA stationary bike.  Pain.  Lots and lots of PAIN.

I prefer thinner padding.
