Subject: Lower Back Pain While Swimming?...
My lower back gets sore when I'm in the pool swimming freestyle for a while. Does anyone have thoughts on why that might be? My thought is I might be hold my head up too high and putting extra strain on my lower back... but I don't know.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks everyone!!

How long have you been swimming?  Swimming requires a decent level of core fitness.  If you haven't been swimming that long, and your core isn't strong enough, it could simply be fatigue from bumping up against the limits of the fitness level of your core muscles.

Your problem is that you have two right arms. Nobody can swim like that.

:D

Seriously, though, either your arching your back severely to try to keep a good position in the water, or you tend to lift "up" rather than turn sideways to breathe. Either one just means you need more strength in your lower back. Supermans are a great exercise for this.

Thanks guys! I've been swimming for a few years, but I HAVE been letting my core work go lately. So that could be part of it.

And I'll pay more attention to how I breathe - I might be pushing up too much instead of turning.

Thanks again!!

I used to experience low back pain while swimming....espeically when I used flippers. I increased my core exercises and stretched before and after swimming and that seemed to make a big difference. Hope everything works out for you!
