I have my 2nd tri tomorrow morning.  My first was just this past Sunday.  (I'm working with a coach...so no, I'm not crazy...they're both sprints) I went to see a massage therapist yesterday after work.  I've seen him before & my coach works with weekly.  He said my lactic acid build up was very high in my body...the highest he's seen in a long time & that makes him worried for me to race tomorrow.  He asked questions about my nutrition & water intake & says they're both too low.  He gave me a light massage for 30 minutes & said if he did anymore it would be very toxic for me.  He gave me one homework thing to lay on the ground & get my butt as close to the wall as possible & lay my legs up against the wall so the blood rushes outa my legs & toward my core.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Any water/nutrion tips?  I thought I had been doing well with upping calories & eating proper foods & taking in a lot of water.  Anyone ever have this problem?  Not something I want to hear before the race so I'm a little discouraged & having trouble shaking the feeling.

Your massage therapist has no idea what he's talking about.  There's no such thing as lactic acid buildup.  It's gone within seconds to minutes after being produced.

I am no professional but I had considered doing a detox diet thinking I had toxins built up from caffeine and junk food.  But then I read on the Mayo Clinic's website that it is unneccesary to detox because your body has sufficient means to get rid of toxins on its own (i.e. kidneys, liver).  So it could be possible that your massage therapist is nutty.  How did he/she know that your body has high levels of lactic acid and does that make it dangerous to race?? I may question that.  But listen to what everyone says and use YOUR best judgment! Best wishes on the race!

I'm new to this tri stuff & am not a health person...although I enjoy learning & researching it to try to better educate myself & understand.  What's the tightness in the hamstrings from?  He dumbed it down to explain it as gum was sticking between my muscles & getting caught, instead of gliding easily.  How does one rid it (aside from stretching/moist heat)?  Prevent it?  Any good links I should look at or keywords to look up?  Going into the massage yesterday, I actually felt pretty good...I knew I was tight but I didn't think I was that tight.  I've downed 64oz of water already today (I have a nalgene bottle to calculate water intake) so hopefully that's a step in the right direction!

I would suggest you to stop seeing this particular therapist.
But what he suggest as "homework" is actually a good stretch so it's ok to do it, especially after you run.

ETA:  GOod luck in your race tomorrow.

Instead of seeing the therapist, paypal me what you would normally pay the therapist. I will perform an incantation tonight that will re-align your aura with positivity.

Seriously, good luck on your race.

Next time someone tells you about "toxins" ask for a name of a specific compound and the specific metabolic pathway to which they are referring.

1) Fire your massage therapist and tell your friends to stear clear because he's an idiot
2) Consider firing your coach if he tells you this is a mistake
3) Enjoy your race

There are a few good books on nutrition for endurance athletes. For sprint distance events you can follow your normal training diet with no worries.

There is no "gum" or anything else sticking between your muscles. Tight hamstrings can come from a variety of places, and cyclists are particularly prone to hamstring/hip flexor/lower back issues because of the position we put our bodies in on the bike and the relative lack of use they get as opposed to the larger quadracep muscle. Stretching that muscle out is the best advice that guy gave you.  other than that... get your advice on training from a coach or CPT, nutrition advice from a nutritionist.

Don't go crazy on the water...64oz by 10 a.m. is probably more than necessary, unless you are starting your day earlier than most.

If your urine has a slight yellow hue, you are good.  If you are peeing totally clear (and like every 30 minutes)...that is too much!

I will say it if no one has...

In terms of your races, no one can really judge as we cannot see you logs to determine base fitness, training volume, etc.

Recovery also has to do with rest and nutrition...

I have to laugh at how I try to say the massage therapist is an idiot and everyone else comes straight out and says it!  That's me: being way too nicey nice!

Heh.. Nothing wrong with nicey nice. I'd probably be nice but I have too much lactic acid in my body and I don't have any chance of getting a good massage today at work.

Edit: No offense to the OP for passing on what she was told. There. That was nice.

Ad0rebella - I wanna know how you do tomorrow! I am going to look for a report!

As for Bill, I don't know if he will be okay with all those toxins building up in his body since no one will give him a massage!  If I weren't such a "nice" girl, I would do it! Tongue out

Thanks all for your feedback. Very helpful & has definitely picked up my mood! & yea Jess, my day today started around 5:30a, so 64oz by whenever I posted, 10 or 11, is more than I normally have but I don't think too bad. Going to pick up my race packet & hopefully mingle with other racers & enjoy a relaxing night. Anyone have any pre race rituals/routines they'd like to share?!

Eat a meal that's low in dietary fiber (no big salads) and easy to digest. Get to bed early. Get to the sight early enough that you don't have to rush for anything. Your body will shed water in response to stress before the race so plan to visit the porta potty a few times. Bring your own roll of TP. You won't have to worry about the inevitable point in time when they run out of TP, and when it happens you'll have 5 or 10 new best friends.

Look for people who look relaxed and act like them. Use the swim as your warm up and go out easy. Go easy the first 1/4 of the bike or so and then pick up the pace to where you are still aerobic (not breathing too hard) but harder than "easy". Switch to an easy gear and spin your legs out when you have a 1/2 mile or so left. Start the run out easy. When you're maybe 1/2 mile in you will feel like picking up the pace, so go for it. Catch some people who went too hard on the swim and bike, or just run at a comfortable pace and enjoy yourself.

Rinse repeat.

Did the tri & finished.  The official results still haven't been posted online, but I'll give some round about numbers.  Had a strong swim performance, under 15 mins.  Great T1 & T2 times.  Bike was ok...avg speed MUCH slower than previous tri, course was more challenging & hilly & had some rough roads.  Run was 5 miler, just kept a good pace, walked 30 seconds after each mile to help the feet & that took about an hour.  Feet were pretty numb from bike to run (was cold if you recall Saturday).

At the end of the race, I felt immediately sick to my stomach & like I was going to throw up.  Luckily, I never did, though I was definitely dehydrated & it took quite a while to feel good.  I'm still feeling the effects this morning...although...I went to a tri yesterday to volunteer & cheer on some friends, so I was on my feet about 7 hours before the sun was even up.

I should've called in Jewish today to rest up!   Definitely going to work on nutrition in the off season & find a specialist.  Anyone in the New York area, I'll take suggestions!

Good job! I was checking to see how ya did!   I felt like I was going to throw up during the run portion my first tri from feeling seasick.  Now I take a non-drowsy form of Dramamine to counteract that feeling.

that is because I gave you the "drug-dealers taste" I did enough of a positive aura incantation to let you finish, but it would still hurt. Imagine how great it would have felt if you paid me in full and I did the full aura-positivity incantation! I use this as incontrovertible proof of the effectiveness of my incantations. I am sure your hard work, discipline, and dedication had nothing to do with it. In fact, I saved your life! Relying on hard work, discipline, and dedication while ignoring leg-aura-toxicity makes you almost suicidal.
