Subject: Walking the Marathon of IMLP
Hi All,

I'm planning on doing IMLP 2012.  My boyfriend would like to do it with me, but cannot run due to arthritis in his knee.  (Well, he could, but the training and actual run during the race would probably force him into a knee replacement.)

He is a very strong swimmer and kills me on the bike all the time.  (I call him Lance and am not totally unconvinced he doesn't sleep with his bike when I'm not around. ;-D )

My question is, if he works the swim and bike, is it realistic for him to finish under the 17:00 time limit speedwalking the marathon?

Thanks so much, O long distance gurus.

If he makes the bike cut off so it out on the run by 10:30 that gives him 6:30 to walk the Mary. I assume he is faster than than just barely making the bike cut off so he will have more time. Many folks can walk the Mary in 6:30-7 hours depending on how fast they walk.

Any idea of how fast he swims/bikes then you can back into how much time he has for the Mary.

He should make it.

I wish I could be more specific about his times but we've just gotten into the training and nothing really long-distance yet.    I'm just sending out feelers before he gets his hopes up for nothing.  He should be in way, way before the 5:30 pm bike cutoff though.  (Whereas I'll probably be on the bike for eight hours, but am a very strong runner.  Stupid bike. Sealed)

If he's a strong swimmer & biker, I would think he could probably do it.

One of our local triathletes walked his way to a 14 (or maybe sub-14) hour finish at IMmoo a couple years ago.  He has a problem with his foot that keeps him from running, so he put on hiking boots and a Cat-in-the-Hat outfit.

1:30 swim- not fast, but not slow

6:00 bike- this is fast, but no need to save it for the walk.

0:15 transitions

9:14 marathon- that's 21 minutes per mile.

16:59 IM finish

I walked/shuffled my way to a 7:17 marathon @ IMWI a couple of weeks ago.

1:17 swim
6:24 bike (held back here a bit, in hopes of trying to "run" some of the marathon... should not have done that)
7:17 marathon. (Ugh!)

Transitions were a bit long due to the helix. Came in at 15:29.

I was recently informed I have the knees of a 70 year old. (Arthritis, bone spurs, zero cartilage) I did IMWI with a broken toe, (that's a whole different story) 70 year old knees, and a probable torn meniscus on the right.

I am 39. My knees are not. (!!)

There's hope for your boyfriend. Just work work work the bike and get some walking specific shoes. Walking in running shoes really hurt the bottoms of my feet. Kiss

The quick answer is yes he can.

I did IMLP in the monsoon of 2008.  I did it with no run training at all as I tore my Planter fascia a year and a bit before.  I registered for IMLP /08 thinking i would be healed.  I was off work for 9 months and was finally able to go back to work In March of /08  at 80% use of my foot and I still couldn't run without pain. I also have arthritis in my knees.  So i went into the race knowing I couldn't/wouldn't run, and would walk the marathon with no doubt in my mind I would finish....... long story short, I swam 1:10 Biked 7:07 I think, and walked the mary in 7:05 hours to come in at 15:45.

Good luck.

Thanks guys!  That's kinda what I thought, just wanted to run it past you all.   It would be wonderful to do the swim and bike training together and share the experience of training for and competiing in the Ironman.

We just managed to train for and complete a three-day ninety mile canoe race together without killing each other, so we should be able to do this. *G*

As others have said, yes, he could totally do it. I just did this for IMWI. Just two weeks before the race I tore my plantar fascia so even walking was out, but I stayed off it and managed to limp my way through. I did 1:27 on the swim, 6:43 on the bike and 7:09 on the "run" for a 15:48:17 finish. The walking was very painful due to the injury and the fact I hadn't trained to walk (totally different muscles) but if he approaches the race that way he'll do fine. My first walk partner of the day never runs in an IM and I looked up his time and he did the walk in just over 6 hours.

Enjoy it, it's a great experience!

He could do it. Just make sure he trains for the walk too.

You were off work for 9 months and then did an IM?
wow, all I can say is wow!

Not to mention I'm old and was 40 lbs over weight, weighing in a 240lbs race day.   ....Ya i like to do things the hard way. That and I'm a little stubborn.   lol

You can read my RR from IMKY (See races button)... but I finished in 15:45 with a decent swim (1:15), a decent bike (7:07) and a ONLY WALKING marathon (6:49).

Wasn't my plan to walk the entire thing... had planed on a 5/2 walk run... but my Achilles started hurting so bad on the bike (I was standing up pedaling and I never did that in training- it's my only guess) I couldn't run when I hit the marathon.
