Subject: Great day in North Georgia...

Despite the nasty weather yesterday and even more rain during the drive to N. Georgia this morning, the day turned out beautiful.

The Six Gap group started at 7:30; those of us doing Three started at 8:30.  As the start time for Six approached, clouds in the sky started giving way to a beautiful sunrise; by the time we rolled out at 8:30, the sun was shining brightly.  The only issue: the sun shining off still wet roads caused some nasty glare!

The ride unfolded nicely and my friend and neighbor, Calvin, and I had a great day; we both rode hard and felt like we left everything out there.  I didn't do a good job of capturing my official start/finish time, but believe I came in somewhere around 3:55 for the 58 and change miles.  All in all, very happy with things, esp as wind gusts increased during the course of the day and I didn't let it waver my resolve to finish under 4.

Hope all of the other Six/Three Gap folks had excellent rides and look forward to reading about them.

Agreed, it turned out to be a gorgeous day! I kicked it off at 7:30 for the 6 Gap. Still formulating my RR but I did successfully finish. Ended up taking 7:07 ride time but 9:12 clock time. You can imagine there was a little suffering going on in those 2 hours of downtime. Actually only had to make three "unofficial" rest stops. One on the side of Hogpen, only one turn away from the mid-climb rest stop. I could hear the cowbell but just couldn't quite get there. Legs were simply on fire so I had to take a couple of minutes to cool it back down. The other two were in rapid succession essentially on the side of Wolfpen. I hit major bonk somehow and had to stop at the store once we turned left onto Hwy 129 and chow down a Snickers and Coke (I had only brought $2 and the total was like $1.96 or something, was livin' right that day). Then I continued to make forward progress but just didn't have enough time for everything to get into my system and went down on the side of Wolfpen for an extended internal conversation about how awesome the SAG wagon was looking. Pulled it together with the help of my riding partner and crippled back home. I did successfully manage to never walk the bike, having been there in the training ride I did on Labor Day weekend. Hope everyone is okay. I saw at least 3 paramedic runs during the course of the day and one guy do an endo / face plant off the side of the Neel's descent. Scary stuff. The race organization and support was awesome!

It sure was a great day.  I did 3 Gap for the first time and thought that was a good challenge.  My hat off to all of you who did 6 Gap.  I cant imagine the effort it would take to finish all 6 Gaps.

Congrats on your first!  You could do Six; simply get in enough training prior and you'd make it.  Jacks and Unicoi Gap are not bad at all; Hogpen is the beast that makes Six especially challenging and Wolfpen, at mile 80 and in the wake of Hogpen, continues to dish out the humble pie.

Congrats again on accomplishing Three; great day for you!

It was definitely a great day to ride.  Hogpen almost took me down and Wolfpen made me want to cry but I made it.  Next time I will train a little more for the ride.

Six Gap RR up. Kinda long but a memorable experience. Glad I wasn't the only one almost crying on Wolfpen!

It was a perfect day for a ride in the mountains. I had a cold/sinus infection thing that made it a little less "fun", but I still really enjoyed being out there and finishing the ride. Hogpen sucked as usual, but the last few miles of rollers weren't expected and caught me off guard more than anything.
Congrats to all the finishers on finishing one of the regions toughest rides.
