I have yet to purchase a bike, so obviously, i have yet to compete in my first triathlon (a long time goal of mine) but have been keeping myself busy on the bikes at the school gym...
My history is much stronger in the running department. This is more of a question just for my own entertainment and hopefully the entertainment of others... but i often got plenty of pretty humorous comments (eventhough they were rarely ment that way) from people i'd pass as i ran through town or passed cars that were stopped at a red light... Even the occational confused look or a sarcastic cheering section on the street corner somehow turned into a motivational tool for me...

I just imagine that with the 'sissy shorts' and the shaved legs that commonly go along with biking there have gotta be some entertaining reactions from these unknowing 'spectators'.. Anyone care to share?

I've had carfulls of people whistle and wolfcall at me. Beats honking. My favorite though is on the annual covered bridge metric century, which goes through PA dutch country. You get crowds of amish and mennonite kids hanging out on their railings and waiving at you, which really is nice.

Unfortunately, most of the comments I get while on the road have kissy faces and catcalls attached (I'm female). It makes me feel a little uncomfortable, to say the least. But, one time, a car road behind Hubby and I and as we turned off into our neighborhood, he called out something like, "Hey, 15 mph!" (I don't remember the exact speed). He must have been a cyclist to have thought of clocking our speed for us.

Over the last 35 years or more of cycling, I have received my fair share of comments, mostly from brain dead fools. Comments about my sexual preference or my manhood are the most common among idiots passing too close in their cars. I've also been spit upon, had beer cans and lit cigarettes flicked at me, and have actually been run off the road by swerving cars. In my younger, and more testoterone ladden days, I used to chase some of these a..holes down and offer to rearrange their faces. Nobody ever got out of their car to take me up on my offer. Nowaday, I take it all with a grain of salt...as the great Alfred E. Newman would day: "What me worry."

my favorite thing about passing people was just the act of passing them. before i had kids, i commuted year round. i would ride all winter, through snow and over ice. come spring, the roadies would come out like crocus and tulips, all clean and brightly colored. many would try and give chase when i would whiz by on my dorky little commuter bike. hee hee. at the moment, every last one of them would leave me in the dust, but at least i have the memories!

Just yesterday, from a friend I rode by in full gear on my new road bike: "Wow, you look official!"

Not so nice was the remark about the size of my husband's, er, manhood from a bunch of guys who drove by while we were cycling around Tasmania.

Only 2 memorable experiences stand out for me....one amusing and one less so.......

While out running around my town I was repeatedly passed by a 60's Triumph open-top sportscars with 2 young ladies driving. They beeped the horn and wolf whistled (not something I get very often as a 30 something male...) while driving up behind me but as soon as they drew level they drove quietly past without so much as a glance in my direction. They did this about 5 times which was rather amusing!

The other was the car driver who passed within about 6 inches of me on my bike, doing at least 60mph who received a fiery barrage of abuse from me and then stopped to 'discuss' the subject. Not the proudest moment for either of us.......

Well I will borrow a story from a bike mag from years ago for this one. Appeantly an A..hole passed a cop ridding a bike a little too close and a little too fast. Moments latter the offending party was pulled over by a crusier. When the driver asked if there was a problem, the officer replied " I am not sure what you did but the officer on the bike riding up behind you sure dose."

Sometimes people do get what they deserve.

hehe That's good "ontherun". I myself have got catcalls as well as some rather rude references as to why I shouldn't be on "their" road. It can get pretty scary, especially when you read about triathletes that had their lives taken by people like that.

I just purchased my first road bike this past weekend and couldn't wait to break it in. On my first ride through town I thought I might have some fear about sharing the road with cars, but it turned out to not be such a horrifying experience after all. Allthough I have only rode a couple of times, with a little more experience I'm sure I'll have some stories to add

Thats why I run and jog with a shirt that reads "Don't F*ck with me! I carry a gun in my shorts!!" on the back. Seems to work.

I would think in Japan it would be enough to get a t-shirt in Japanese that says something like BIG SCARY GAI-JIN. That reminds me, I lived in Japan for a while and once while I was out cycling (which was all the time, I didn't have a car), a couple of teenage boys pulled up and stuck their porn magazine out the window at me, laughing hysterically. It's hard to be afraid when you're taller than 90% of the population - "Sure, dwarf, get out of your car and say that!"
