Subject: Advice please
Having a bit of a heart issue it was my excuse for doing nothing. However when it began to improve I still took it easy.
I used to be very fit, in the army infact.
Now when I got to 20 stone I thought enough was enough, 3 months later and im am now 18 stone still a big boy but going down.
Last week however I watched people doing a triathlon and had my ureka moment, I checked it out with the Doctor who said go ahead.
I have given myself a year to be ready for a sprint event.
I am riding, swimming and speed walking as achlies tendon a bit inflamed at the moment.
However my reason for posting is to ask a question what is the best combined heart onitor and GPS unit to by so I can keep better tags on whan I am acheaving.
Regards,Simon.

Simon, first- Welcome to BT!  Second, I have no idea about which HRM and GPS would work best for you.  I'm too cheap to invest in those.  I can see how it would be rather beneficial with your medical background though.

I'm sure there have been plenty of topics covering it previously, and if you use the search function, located in the very upper right of the BT window, you should be able to find lots of info.

Good luck with your training, and your weight loss.

Simon,

Welcome! The Triathlon Talk forum has had several threads on this but it is going to be somewhat of a personal preference on GPS'.  I have the Garmin 301 and 405.  The 405 is more accurate and has a better HR strap.  On the other hand 301 can be purchased for very little money.

Check out the threads on the GPS' which will have a lot of great info to help you decide which one you should get.  Good luck!

Welcome, and congrats on moving in the right direction!!!

I don't use those things, so I have nothing to offer, but I just wanted to say that I think what you're doing is so cool. Start off easy, and work your way into it! Soon, you'll be hooked on triathlons!

Congrats, and happy training!!

I have the Garmin forerunner 405 and it is fantastic. I wear it everyday, it is small enough to be a regular watch and when I run it does everything I need. Time, distance, pace, etc. It has many more features as well.

Are you on a beta blocker for the heart issue? If so, a heart rate monitor will be useless to train with, though it can give comfort if you are worried about exceeding a certain range. Feel free to PM me if you wish this to be private.
