Subject: New shoes; big dilemma

Sorry for the long post, but I need to explain the question fully.

I've been running with Asics 2130s for the past year.  I did one marathon, and I'm training for my 2nd marathon.  I lost a lot of toenails, but other than that the Asics seemed to fit "okay".

Now that I'm running much faster, I thought I'd go in for a new fitting and see if I could get some shoes which fit better.  I left the store with Brooks Adrenaline.

Now, with new shoes for comparison I'm 90% sure that the Asics were a bit too narrow for me.  The net effect was that my feet were twisted slightly outwards, limiting ankle flexibility.  Also with the foot twisted slightly up, the toes bent down, leading to toe blistering and toenail loss.

The Brooks fit seems to be a _much_ better, but there is a downside.  With my foot flatter and my ankle freer, the muscle effort is distributed differently.  I've got a lot of miles on my old, wrong, fit and I'm used to it.  Even on a 4.5 mile run yesterday, muscles and tendons I hadn't previously been using much (particularly around the achilles) were beat up and tired.

It almost feels like I'm going to have to build up a lot of base miles from scratch.  But, I've got a marathon in less than 2 months.

I'm terrified of trying this week's 16.5 mile run with the new shoes, for fear that I'll strain an underused muscle.  But I can't wait longer, as running an 18 mile run in new shoes would be even worse.  My plan for tomorrow is to run 5.5 miles in the old shoes, and then switch to the new shoes for the last 11 miles.

Based on the success or failure of that, I'll decide if I want to keep building up muscles for the new shoe fit, or if I want to dump the better fit for now and buy another pair of Asics to get me through the marathon.

Any advice?  Does this seem reasonable?

I run in Brooks Adrenaline as well, and they are great for me, but also now use SuperFeet Green inserts. this combination works really well, as I have pretty junk arches.

definitely get some miles on the new shoes before the race, so you know if there are any major issues...even sock changes can make a big difference.

case in point, I ran only 6miles with new socks last week on a training run, and got some nasty blisters that screwed up my run in a sprint tri.  the moral of the story is not to make any risky gear adjustments close to a race !

I interchange the Asics 2XXXs and the Adrenalines freely with no problem, often on every other run.

Why not do your long run in your old shoes, then run yoour shorter runs next week in the Adrenalines to get used to them?

Well... next week's long run is going to be even harder.   I figure the sooner that I can fit in some relatively long runs in my new shoes, the better.

Considering the fact that I'm using muscles differently, does anyone have any guesses for how long it might take to build up the muscles to support me properly for the long runs?

Days?  Weeks?  Months?

Next week's run may be longer (not sure why you say "harder"), but by then you'll have 3, 4, 5 additional runs in the new shoes. That should go a long way "to build up the muscles to support (you)properly for the long runs."

Big ado about nothing.

Went out today, 7mi in the old shoes, changed shoes, 9.5mi in the new shoes.  Run went great without any major problems.

Now I'm pretty confident that I'll be ready to do my full 18mi long run next week in the new shoes.

P.S. It's harder not only because it's longer, but also because I'm doing 18mi of hills.  :-)

I do it because it makes me stronger.  I started doing hilly long runs in preparation for the hilly SF marathon .  Now, I'm training for Vegas.  I figure if I do hilly routes for my 18 and 22 mile long runs, then I should be in _great_ shape for a flat 26.2 miles in Vegas.

Am I insane?  Maybe.  But aren't all runners and triathletes masochists to some degree?  :-)

Gee.

Losing 'lots of toenails' and being ok with it, is more that what I can bear.

other than that, I'd say get half a size up.

methinks that there is fine line between trying to figure out where your limits might be and liking to take punishment just for the sake of punishment (isn't that last one the definition of a masochist?)
