Man I have zero motivation. It has been a little over a month since the race and I do not feel like doing anything. How long did it take you to want to get out there and workout again? The day after the race I was so pumped up I had to hold myself back from going for a run now I am trying to hold myself back from hitting the fridge.

Be kind to yourself.

I did IM I think same day as you. I took 4 weeks off right after IM which was mentally hard at the beginning but good in time. It was hard to see my well earned fitness leave me. Now I'm 2 weeks back to training but racing cyclocross which I love but I don't have my rhythm back yet.

Do you have another race sheduled in the off season?

Maybe focus on the stuff you let slide while IM training.

Ditto here. Did IMLP that just sat around for about a month.  I got into NY marathon through a charity slot so that got me moving again.   However, if I didnt have this to shoot for, I think I would just sit around.

Man, me too...

My plan (...which, has been my plan for the last couple weeks.  Still trying to implement it...grrr) is to start slow...45 min workouts.  EASY talking pace runs, and spins on the bike.  My goal for the winter is to weight train to get strong and build a base to start IM training  next spring again...

Now if I could just get off my behind!

Let us know what has gotten you back on the wagon!

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum.....even if I did not have IMAZ to train for after IMKY....I would still be out there doing the S/B/R thing.  Maybe you just need another goal to shoot for?  Last year after IMKY I started focusing on changing body comp.  Think of another goal, something small and easy for you to attain, like maybe going for a 1 mile run.  A body in motion tends to stay in motion

Or you could always drop in on the Peach Challenge on the Challenge forum.

After my 1st IM it was over a year. Basically till I decided to enter my second one.  Only then did I start training again.  My second one was better and I felt much more motivated after I had finished it.  I started entering running races and stuff almost straight away.

I took 2 weeks basically off except for a lot of work around the house.  I then started super lite on week 3 and have increased gradually since then.  It was really about 1 month before I was feelling 100 percent and gtg for training for a January marathon.  If I were not doing a marathon I could easily see taking 2 months off and just start over at that point. Mayb just doing some lite workouts for fun, no hr monitor, no LT intervals, just fun.

i took almost 2 months off, I had no motivation. my first month I did nothing, second month i started very slowly but had a lot of trouble due to not having a plan in place. You train for so long with a plan of what you need to do for the remainder of each week, and then there is nothing to guide you... I did IMCDA in June, and just started to really get back into it. But still find it dificult due to not having a race on schedule until next May, the Columbia Triathlon.

after I finished mine I took about a week off...then I hit the pool for an easy swim.  I've been on the spin bike a few times but still not on my road bike about a month later.  I took about 3-weeks before I ran.  Not so much because I lack motivation but because my body needs a rest!  You just finished an IM...you need rest too.  Don't worry about the lack of motivation.  Now if next spring you're still feeling like sitting on the couch...then maybe be concerned.

For me it is all about goals,  I got to have goals all the time in order to be motivated..    I will do IMAZ next month then,  I have registered for a marathon exactelly two weeks after,  then on Feb I will be doing a double Century,  so I already planned my whole race schedule for next year..  So the secret is just start planning and look forward to the future...     The world does not end when you finish an IM,  there is so much more out there..

You don't feel like it?  What does that have to do with it?  IMKY was 6 weeks ago?  Get back out there and s/b/r.  You are a triathlete and that is what we do.  But don't train, just swim and enjoy the water.  Run and enjoy being out in the fresh air.  Bike and listen to the birds and the wind and have fun.  Enjoy the cool days of fall.  Don't worry about time or pace or distance....just be thankful that you are alive and healthy.  If you don't feel like swimming, biking or running, go anyway.  Don't live you life by your feelings.  Most of the time you will find you feel better after you s/b/r than if you did not.

I think it depends on the next goal. I did IMUK and then went on vacation afterwords to Romania.

I think taking time off is important. I took about a month because I was moving and dealing with a little tendinitis (be careful of those Zoot racing flats!)! As it's getting cold now, It has been a little difficult to get to the gym...UNTIL I signed up for the NEXT race...the Death Valley Marathon in February!

My marathon was pretty slow, and now this gives me a winter training goal to hold me over till the spring...and work on my running.

In conclusion, I think having the next race planned AFTER your IM is the key to keeping fitness ad keeping motivated.

Truth is that this is perfectly normal. Your body probably still recovering. This is why it is called transition period. You can't be balls to the walls tri geek 100% all the time.

I suggest you try to stay a little active, but switch it up a little. Do some other activities that will keep you from gaining 50lbs, but that won't tear the crap out of you.

Try hiking, or skiing if the opportunity presents. Try doing some yoga or core. Maybe some strength.

Come spring, you'll be ready to go again. And if not, sell your bike and move on to another passtime.

I did IMLP at the end of the 1st week of a 3 week road vacation and I did nothing until after I got home. I definitely had the post IM blues and felt like I needed to get back out there training. I ended up signing up for the Beach to Battleship iron distance tri which is coming up in about 3 weeks. After getting back out and training in the FL heat I sort of regretted even signing up for another long distance tri. I have not trained nearly as much as I did for IMLP, but I hope it is enough to not make for a miserable day at B2B.

Could just be IM training burn out

Prior to IM it is all about "I am training for an IM, and I have to do this workout, becasue I have 140.6 to complete."

For me, the month after IM is my favorite time, as I give myself permission to just go out and ride my bike/run and enjoy the fall colors here in WI.
There is no panic if 'I miss a workout'.
I use this time to put together my races for next season, review my training logs, what I learned from my races, and make my training plan for winter.

Physically- If your body is tired then let it rest. This year, I was forced to rest, as I got sick 3 days after IM.

Mentally -  Decide what your goals and motivation are for doing Tri's.

It's a very common and physiological problem.

Google "post marathon depression" for more info.

I appreciate all the advice. I am starting to get the bug back a little. An injury has me down plus we are expecting our second child in May and I know that next summer won't be the best for training and racing so it is a little hard to get excited to start building when I won't have much time. But I am swimming and running and it is good.

After IMKY in 2008... I took off a good 3 months. It wasn't still I signed up for a marathon for May 2009 that I got off my butt and did something... and that training started in Dec. 2008.

It's OK to take some time off... to get a MENTAL and PHYSICAL break. Find something you want to do in 2010 and sign up for it... that can motivate you when it's time.
