O.K. this may be a little long but I need some input and you probably need some info. This was my first season in triathlon, I only have sprint experience. I started training 8 months ago right off the couch, I have lost 30 lbs and have a new lease on life. I had spent the last 18 years of my life building my business and neglecting my body. I have commited to doing a HIM next year. I am front of the MOP overall and back of FOP on bike. I ride 50-80 mpw which will increase w/ a HIM in my future. I ride a Trek 2.3. I want to buy a tri bike as I think it will help in the HIM I committed to next September. The Patriot Half in Williamsburg Va. (not actually IM Inc.). My LBS do not have much selection as far as tri bikes go. I am going to North Carolina Thursday so I made an appointment at Inside Out in Cary, N.C.. Does anyone know anything about them? They have several frames my size Felt B2, Cervelo P2, Cervelo P4, and Look 576. Money is not really an issue, I will pay for the best bike for me although I don't know if I can be that guy. You know that 42 year old MOPer with the 6000.00 bike.  I know that everyone will say buy the bike that feels best to you, but really having never ridden a tri bike how will I really know with a short test ride. Will I know? Any thoughts suggestions would be great, thanks for your input.

First of all, realize that a $1500 vs. a $6000 bike will make almost zero difference at your level.  The more expensive bike _could_ potentially even do more harm than good.  A lot of aero components are designed for speed over comfort, and if you don't feel comfortable and stable on your bike, your performance will probably suffer.

Read this article about "long and low" vs. "short and narrow":

http://www.slowtwitch.com/Bike_Fit/Choosing_a_Tri_Bike_via_Stack_and_Reach/Long_and_low_short_and_narrow_613.html

Have a good bike fitter help you decide which of those categories that you fit into, and then buy a  bike from one of the manufacturers that fits your body type.  I don't think you really can go wrong with a carbon bike from any of the main tri bike companies.

2 big cents.

Thanks, I read the article and it made sense. I have heard that the Felts are less "twitchy" than Cervelo so I have been leaning that way, but again I have no idea.

That's a good article and indicates exactly why I choose my TTX. I would ignore comments like one bike is more "twitchy" than another. Stuff like that is highly dependent on the rider's specific position on the bikes. IMO, choosing a frame that matches your body is by far the most important aspect. And as the article says, most bike shop personnel won't know (even if they act like they do). So it's up to you to be sure that you know.

I just recently bought a tri bike.  I road the felt and a cervelo P2c.  I ended up with the Cervelo.  I only have 7 tri's under my belt so I am by no means an expert.  Both bikes rode great.  I think I more or less ended up with the Cervelo due to all the guys that I train with ride them.  So far I have put 350 miles on it and it is awesome.  Good luck with making your decision.

I bought my Felt S22 in 2006 from Inside Out.  I had great service and they gave me 15% off on any accessories I purchased from them at the same time so I got a wireless CPU, bike shoes, pedals, different cassette and new running shoes from them.

Any good bike shop will let you take the bike for 6 to 10 miles.  If they don't let you do that, they don't want/need your business.  Also, I'm not sure how long you have to drive, but many shops do a fly and buy program, so you may be able to get a percentage off....not that it matters to you.

If you are just starting out and this is your first tri bike, I would go with any of the three in the 2500 to 3000 range.  Felt B12, Cervelo P2, Kuota K-Factor....these types/setups will do you just fine.

May I also suggest that you not buy a bike that is going to put you in a very aggressive position at first.  If you are jumping into a HIM after one year experience (which is what I did, so it's totally doable) then you may be more comfortable at long distances on a less aggressive bike.
