pendlek - 2009-10-14 11:10 AM How do you know it is not going to be a 70.3 next year?  The SOR website has been down, since people started saying this event was purchased by Ironman.

RD told me so....figure he probably knows what he is talking about.

A definite maybe... but, Door County would be pretty sweet as well.  I heard they have strippers! (of the wetsuit-helper kind).  And a relaxing time in DC would be nice afterwards.

Door County had strippers for the sprint distance also this past summer. awesome! I'm trying to decide between Door County and Racine for my first halfiron.

I've done Door County for the last few years.  Actually, both my wife and I have raced it  - everything from the Sprint to the Olympic (when they had it) and the HIM.

I know there are a lot here who really like Racine (which I admittedly havn't done), but I think Door County is a phenomonal race.  And, its a nice destination to spend some time at afterwards with the family.  We usually camp at Peninsula State park the following week.

Things to note:

Sprint is on a Saturday and HIM on Sunday.

The sprint race tends to fill up and close registration early and I suspect the HIM could also hit their limit this year.

I've heard the HIM distance is more challending than SOR but I'll let people who've done both clarify that one.

The HIM run has some big hills but it ends going down a long hill, which is always fun.

I didn't notice it, but I heard they ran out of Gatorade (or whatever they use) early in the ride and this was a problem for some racers.  Knowing the RD, I am sure he took this criticism to heart and will make sure it doesn't happen again.

Basically, I think its a really good race venue - Sean Ryan is a very good and safe RD (except for funning out of gatorade on the bike course), the event is nicely organized and well-supported, very secure transition area,  good parking, scenic bike and run routes, and the best (and I mean the best!) vittles after the race.

Oh - and they have strippers.

If Ironman has bought/will buy SOR then I guess we will need to shelve out a few more dollars for the race. Hmmm maybe I will start to advertise on my tri top and bike to get the extra dollars

yikes - $200 for early bird registration?

Well, the hard part is getting to the starting line.  And by that, i mean convincing my wife to shell out that much for registration.

Why bummed?  I've never done a 70.3 event, but have already signed up for Lonestar and plan to do this one too.  What don't I know?

Bummed because last year I paid the super early bird price, which I believe was 90 bucks. So, to pay 200 is a HUGE jump. AND I absolutely detest powerbar products, which is the only thing used at Ironman events. (Last year it was Hammer products.)

And, finally bummed because I figured that if my knee didn't shape up, at the very least I could do the aquabike. But, they did away with that event. (Not to mention that I'm guessing that there also will be no sprint event associated with it.) All in all, it just feels...diminished to me.

On a positive note, it looks like it won't be the same weekend as Tri'ing for Children's. So, my guess is I'll end up coughing up the extra money and carrying my own fuel with me and doing it, since it'll probably be a huge donkey adventure again.
