Subject: Love handles/spare tire
BT Friends,

I'm rocking the weight loss, 28 lbs. in 11 weeks, eating sensibly, bike commuting 6 hours a week, running and swimming twice a week.  Ran my first Sprint two weeks ago, did a negative split on the run.  I feel great!

I have another 25 - 30 lbs to lose (then, I'll be a Clydesdale to be reckoned with at 205).   My big belly went away first, but I have these lingering love handles and spare tire..

I do core exercises once or twice a week, but are there specific exercise to target the spare tire and love handles?  I REALLY want to see those go away.

Thanks!

Seth

I used to work with a guy for a year who came from pure fitness as a personal trainer. He worked with me a lot. it all starts in the kitchen. also, your body is built to adapt...so make sure you change up what you are doing during the week, add intervals, etc. otherwise you will just plateua and weightloss will be difficult. some other tips include very little to no carbs after 6pm, avoid any liquid calories, avoid alcohol, eat 5-6 small meals a day, eat lots of lean protein and veggies and stay away from sugars unless its before and after a workout.

hope that helps

also..doing core work is fine...as it can build muscle and more muscle equals higher metabolism. but if the muslces get bigger and your diet is not in check, your stomach will look bigger in general. you should also weight train and focus on compound movements (2 or more joints moving to complete the exercise).

its pretty simple. right now you have extra body fat. to lose it, keep up with the weight loss, those will be the last areas to go. running/swimming will help with the midsection more, but its all about lowering the BF % at this point.

Thanks David.

I'm eating very well (my wife is an excellent cook), I'm hungry at night, especially on the days I bike commute.

I'm trying to maintain calorie intake to lose 2.5 - 3.0 lbs per week.

Once i get down to fighting weight, i'll be able to eat a lot more, but still good stuff.

.

x2.

Everyone has sculpted abs-they're just hidden by some layer of fat.  If one's layer is .25 inches, they will have impressive abs.  If one's layer is 3 inches, not so much.  Lose some more weight, and you'll get there.  Core/ab work will make them look nice once you can see them, but until that point, core/ab work probably won't help much for the appearance you're looking for.

Core work is certainly useful for triathlon performance, so by all means keep it up!

If diet and training is in line a good fatburner always does wonders :D

just as another example, right now i am close to my goal weight for next season (i prefer to get most of the weightloss out of the way over the fall/winter so i can eat normally once training picks up).

right now i am at 152 and 7-8% body fat and the last bit of love handle is finally dissapearing.

abs have been pretty defined for a bit, all through BF loss as i pretty much hate all forms of core work.

keep training, it will get there

I'm in the exact same boat. I lost 96 pounds. and went from 282 to 186. Now I've plateaued at 186 for a while, but I still have the love handles. I think I'm going to try the no carbs after 6 PM thing. I've added a third run day. I was previously 2x of all three sports. I think I'm getting better at running, but it's made me more hungry as well.

i would watch restricting foods at certain times. the reason you are hitting a wall is that as you get lighter, and in better shape, your body is able to do the same work as before on less fuel. so you need to be slowly scaling back the food intake with the weightloss/fitness gains.

the smaller the amount you have to lose the harder it will be as small changes make it happen. also keep in mind that if you really want this to happen you might end up being a bit hungry now and then while your body adjusts.

I went from 380+ to 174 and, while I'm down to about 9% bf, I have alot of that spare tire left.  It's mostly just loose gross skin, and I'm not sure anything other than surgery will fix it.  Anyone else experience this?  It's a bummer, but it beats being  unhealthy.

i've lost over 100lbs and i have the same problem. i went to see a doctor and he told me what i really didn't want to hear: there is no way the skin will recover. the only way to get rid of all that flabby skin is by surgery.

i've tried to get rid of it by working out, abs work and stuff. no chance. sorry man.

Wow, JustMike and Kathy!!!

I have also dropped right at 116 pounds with about 10 to go.  I am holding out hope that the skin tightens up some more.  From what I am reading its more about genetics than working out.  Mine is not terrible but it's certainly there.
