Subject: Sprints Races as training tools for longer races?
Hello

First season completed with two sprint races.  I missed one race with a pulled right hamstring and the last race I could not run so I walked the 5K run.  I have come a long way with my swimming highlighted with less than 10 minute ocean OWS  including run-out.

I am thinking about next season.

My goal for next year is to do an Olyimpic distance race and really do well in all the events.

I was thinking about using our local Charleston Sprint Series (4 races total) as  training for my one big event.  This will keep the focus on my training as I work towards my goal for 2010.

Do you all use the sprint races as training for longer events?

Kevin

Sprint races can be good training for longer races.  You get a high intensity workout and you get to practice transitions and pacing yourself in a race.  As long as you can work it into your plan, it's a great idea.

That said, I do sprints simply because they are fun.

That was the reccomendation made to me; use the sprint events as they fit into my training, but maintain focus on the Oly Distance.  The sprints would be stepping stones.

I will probably do a few sprints next season (because they are fun!), but I'm going to take advantage of the Oly distances I can find, but pick one to be my "A" race; probably Redman next year.

Good luck!

I would like to make an oly my A race next year, if I can get my swim greatly improved.
But all my races leading up to that will be sprints. I won't look at them as training races though.

Lots of racers in HIM and IM length do look at sprints as training, or benchmarks to see how they are doing under actual race conditions.
