My undertstanding is that Kona has approximately 1500 participants. From what I understand only about 200 of those slots are for those who did not qualify and entered through a lottery system. Since the majority of the mens and womens age groupers who qualified are going sub 12 hours what is the race experience for the lottery winners? At other 140.6 distance races you probably have a more even distribution of finishing times. This may allow to you to see at least a couple other people on the course during your race. For those who have done it or watched is it a giant glut of folks going sub 12 and then just stragglers for the next 5 hours?

Qualifying times are all over the map because there are spots available for each of the sexes that span decades.  I think while there may be a heavier weight of fast AGers in the 20 - 50 year old groups, you will find that HI still has a spread similar to other large IM's for times.

Some people bust their butt to get in and then go to HI to experience the event and not try to put the smack down on the field again.

Actually I was surprised at how many people finished after 12 or 13 hours. I finished in 15:51 and there were people around the whole time. Some people also qualify in races where the competition is not as tight as races like IMWI and Lake Placid, and like the previous person said, since there are slots in every age group, the times will definitely be well spread. So definitely don't worry about coming in late and not being around people!

We stayed the extra hour until the end and there were a bunch of people still coming in during that hour as well. No matter what pace you are in the race, you won't be all by yourself, and you will have a fantastic time!!

Closer to 1800 athletes. People finish all over the board. Good luck.
