yeah, me too.  And what about wearing Jobst socks?  They cost less than the athletic brands.

I love them.  I've worn them while running and for recovery.  I have a pair of the SLS compression socks and I'd love to get a pair of the Zoot ones.

I have heard good things about the SLS, also have heard real good things from the new DeSoto ones. I have a pair of 2XU Tights that I use for recovery that seem to work well for me.

I own a pair of CEP running compression socks and a pair of the Zensah calf sleeves. I love both for recovery only, dont wear either while I exercise. The Zensah's offer more compression IMO so if I have had a really hard run or bike I'll put them on for a couple of hours. The CEP's I could wear all day, if I'm going to be going out of the house I'll put them on and keep 'em on, also great for travel.

Carl,
I'm not an expert, googling has all the technical descriptions you'll need
From what I understand, the socks help promote blood flow and have been used for years in airplanes where sitting for long times causes "pooling" of blood in the lower legs and feet.  It also helps prevent spider and varicose veins.

I've been using them for about 3 months and also during may last race.  In that race after T2, my calves (both) locked/cramped up, but I kept going and I attribute my ability to finish strong to the socks.  My only issue is the cost, I don't understand why a pair of socks can cost so much.  A few pairs can put me in the hole!

I like that DeSoto only claims what the socks are good for, recovery.  I stick to recovery from compression and have had good luck, I think benefits in a race are minimal.  Great for traveling just as medical grade socks help prevent clots, so be it airplanes or even sitting in a long drive it is worth it.  Heck for those who sit at a desk most of the day it can even provide some benefit.

I never travel without them! And yes, I have used them for recovery as well, especially on multi-day tours and long ski vacations, but first and foremost, for travel for me.

The Zoot compression socks have really helped me with recovery and also my shin splints.  I wear them for recovery and have also wore them to exercise.  The first time out I felt a little restrained by them.  After that they work great!

I did a review of the zensah sleeves on my blog.  I like them.  The short answer for me is they at least feel good during recovery, and they probably help a bit.  I don't think they really do much for me during a race/long run but ymmv of course.

I bought a pair of compression socks (don't laugh) from the "sports medicine" section of the health isle at my grocery store.  $13 and they feel awesome-I'm actually wearing them now.  However, I have a pair of 2XU calf guards coming in the mail today.

Seriously, before you drop $55 on a pair try looking at a pharmacy or even a grocery store for theirs first.  You may find out you either don't like them or a $13 pair is all you need.

Ok, my 2XU calf guards just came in the mail.  First impression is that they do not provide as much compression as my grocery store socks, hilarious.  If this thread is still alive after I use them on a run I will post my thoughts.

I have both and it's a toss up, sometimes I like wearing the calf guards and sometimes I like the socks.  They seem to provide the same amount of compression for me though.

Running&Compression - 2009-10-27 12:12 PM

Hey ... there's a well written free report on all of the various clinical studies of compression, running compression socks (graduated compression socks) etc here:

Interesting spam first post Undecided

For anyone who goes to the study, make sure you read up on signifigance and effect size.

For the OP, I have medical grade socks that I wear after a hard race or when flying.  They seem to help so I'm going to continue but can't imagine taking the time to put them on in a race.

I came in from a 10 mile run, sat down at my pc to log the workout, check my email etc. and there's a heads up about the spam posted in this thread.

I just happen to be wearing a pair of SL3s compression socks which I've found really do contribute to faster recovery for runs of 10 miles and over.

disclosure: these socks were sent to me by the manufacturer. I did not buy them.* That being said, I really do like them. If I didn't, I wouldn't wear them.

*One of the nice benefits of this gig is that I do get the occasional "hey BT dude, can we send you some stuff?" email.  If it's good stuff, I'll use it and tell people.  If it isn't I'll let them know what I didn't like about it.  We're not talking anything major it's literally a pair of socks here, a nutrition bar there.  There are BTers who get far more in sponsorship swag. I'm still waiting on that email from a bike company though. Wink
