When i was in college (Houghton, MI), a friend of mine would stud his tires with short sheet metal screws.  shoot them into the lugs, and he never had any problems.

The past few years I commuted on a MTB and did not have any problems.  However, after three years of Nova Scotia roads (which are often more salt than pavement) despite my best efforts I had to retire the old MTB.

This year I plan to run cyclocross tires on my fixie on bad days and my commuter road bike with regular tires on good days.

I'm planning to get studded tires.  I've tried riding on ice and slush with regular tires (not even racing ones, but slicks nonetheless) and it was too scary.  I fell finally and gave that up.

I'm also againsnt falling on a trail, alone, in the cold...

Road.  I have an ugly Fuji 80s 10-speed that's fitted with fenders and stuff.

That is my concern.  I don't mind wiping out in the park when no cars are around but don't really want to test their braking ability out with my head on the line

Studded road or mtn bike tires?

Do you think the cross tires will work on Icy days?  My concern is the day after snow and the roads are snow free but still with ice underneath.

I had studded mtn bike tires but am not going to push that thing 20 miles in the snow on a SS.  Was contemplating studding out my 29'ers though.

In three winters of cycle commuting, I've never gone down - I've cycled on fresh and packed snow, ice, in slush and rain.  The only thing I do differently is to brake earlier before turns so that I only have minimal lean through slippery/slick corners.  I had consider studded tires but IME, they weren't neccessary for the conditions I typically experience.

The one time I've gone down due to ice was a cold April morning when a puddle I thought was just water was solid ice; too fast into the turn and down I went.  While I think studs would have kept me upright in this situation, I probably wouldn't have had them on as it was no longer winter riding and I just didn't expect ice that morning.

Do you mind sharing your Cross Tire that you use?

Second hand info here but, when I was looking at studded tires at a local shop a couple of years ago the sales guy cautioned me that studded tires can skid out more easily on pavement or concrete. Since the local climate is usually quite dry, and the bike routes are bare more often than not, I decided against studs.

My mountain bike was wearing fat soft knobbies at the time too though. That bike broke and the current commuter bike is on 700x38 street tires. They don't inspire much confidence on ice and snow so I'm also reconsidering other options again.
